Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce

Chesham cruised to a surprisingly comfortable win against a Hereford side that had won their previous six games, as a result of which Chesham’s unbeaten league run now stands at ten. Chesham were always in control after taking an early lead which Hereford rarely looked like cancelling out, and Alex Brown’s goal early in the second half killed the game as a contest.

With George Fenton and Liam Malone ruled out by injury, Mark Bell and Connor Wood came into the side with Toby Little moving forward into midfield. After an even start Chesham took the lead in the eighth minute, after they were awarded a free kick close to the by-line on the left. Mark Bell went for goal at the near post but the ball was cleared back to him, and his second attempt eluded keeper Luke Williams and went straight into the net. Hereford came back and on the quarter-hour Serge Mor Diop’s cross was helped on by Daniel Sullivan and Steve Vetier sliced a volley wide of the near post. Diop was then just off target with a 25-yard effort, but as the half went on Chesham created the better chances. A good move saw Ryan Blake denied and the ball dropped to Mark Bell who shot wide. Toby Little advanced from the left to fire in a shot that Williams did well to save to his left, then Toby Little’s free kick beat Williams but came back off the bar.

Hereford started the second half strongly, and in the second minute Shane Gore was forced to punch the ball behind for a corner as Joshua Yorweth’s cross was not cleared. However Chesham soon resumed control and Dave Pearce had a shot tipped over by Williams. Ryan Blake then pulled the ball back from the by-line to Simon Thomas who could only shoot straight at Williams, then a quickly-taken free kick saw Thomas control and shoot but Williams again tipped over. However on 57 minutes Dave Pearce crossed from the right after a corner was only part-cleared, and Alex Brown controlled and hooked the ball into the net to make it 2-0. Chesham continued to push forward and the ball was just cleared away from Thomas and Blake after a Mark Bell cross, then Dave Pearce’s shot from just outside the area flew just wide. Hereford made a triple substitution just after the hour but to no avail. Ryan Blake ran at the heart of the visitors’ defence and shot but Williams parried, then Blake pulled the ball back from the by-line to Dave Pearce who shot over the top from close range. Hereford briefly came back into the game and Shane Gore made a fine save, diving to his right to turn away Joshua Hawker’s shot, then a more routine save from Gary O’Neil’s long-range effort. From the resulting corner the ball was headed goalwards but cleared off the line. However Chesham comfortably saw out the rest of the game and scored a fine third goal late on. Ryan Blake’s long crossfield pass found Dave Pearce who passed to Simon Thomas, collected the return and advanced into the area to shoot into the far corner of the net.
