Chesham United Man of the Match: Ryan Blake

As this game went into stoppage time it looked as if Chesham were going to sneak a win on a difficult afternoon, but a late own goal ensured Chesham’s fourth consecutive league draw.

Chesham started the game with the same formation of three central defenders used in Tuesday’s game at Chalfont St Peter, so the only changes saw Ashley Smith and Liam Malone return for Connor Wood and Mark Bell. On a pitch that had been used for an FA Vase match the night before, Chesham played down the slope in the first half. The home team shaded the early possession but Chesham had the first worthwhile effort on goal, a long-range effort from Ashley Smith that flew just over. Three minutes later Liam Malone’s long-range effort saw home keeper Kent Kauppinen stick out a hand to knock the ball over the bar, then Kauppinen tipped over a Simon Thomas header from Dave Pearce’s free kick. Midway through the half George Fenton limped off with a hamstring strain, so Chesham reverted to the normal back four with Mark Bell coming on in midfield. The remainder of the half was fairly quiet with Chesham still on top, although Chippenham did come close on one occasion when Alex Ferguson fired the ball across the Chesham area but nobody was able to get on the end of it.

Chippenham played down the slope in the second half and just before the hour mark Shane Gore produced a sharp save when Alex Ferguson got his head to James Guthrie’s free kick. Shortly afterwards Chesham prepared to defend a corner when there was an altercation between Darren Purse and Matt Coupe, which ended when Purse turned away after Coupe’s flailing arm caught him in the face. The referee sent both players off although it was difficult to see what Purse had done to deserve a red card. Chesham responded by moving Simon Thomas into the centre of defence. In the next minute Mark Preece’s header from Guthrie’s corner was cleared off the line by Ashley Smith, but afterwards Chesham regrouped and were relatively untroubled. Fifteen minutes from time Ryan Blake was brought down as he attempted to break down the right, Toby Little took the resulting free kick and the ball flew across the area and straight into the net at the far post. Chippenham threw Mark Preece and then Greg Tindle forward and went for broke, but created little apart from a couple of scrambles in the Chesham box. However in the third minute of stoppage time Luke Ballinger crossed from the right, Greg Tindle headed the ball back across goal and Simon Thomas was caught in two minds and ended up chesting the ball into his own net at the near post.
