Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Chesham had the rare experience of an end-of season game with nothing hanging on the result. With an eye on next week’s play-offs Chesham cruised through this goalless draw against mid-table Weymouth.

After returning to the club for the Berks & Bucks Cup final in midweek Danny Gordon kept his place, while Daniel Brathwaite and Chris Dillon were rested. It was obvious from early on that neither side had anything to play for, as it was not until the 29th minute that either side had a shot and even then James Potton’s 25-yard effort was high and wide. Chesham had the majority of possession in the first half, Potton getting on the end of a Toby Little cross but firing straight at keeper Jason Matthews, then then Potton was just beaten to a Bruce Wilson cross by Ashley Wells who cleared although the referee gave a goal kick. Toby Little broke forward and shot over the bar from 25 yards, while Weymouth’s only effort on goal in the half was a header from Isaac Vassell that was way off target.

Early in the second half Matthews fumbled a cross from James Potton and Drew Roberts stuck out a foot but could only knock the ball over the bar from close range. Vassell tried a long-range effort that flew over the bar, but Chesham were still on top and Dave Fotheringham challenged for a cross from Bruce Wilson, the ball eventually coming to James Potton whose shot flew across goal. Just after the hour mark Drew Roberts reacted to a challenge by George Rigg by lashing out with his elbow and was shown a straight red card. However Chesham still looked the more likely to score and Scott Thomas lifted the ball back into the area after a corner was cleared, and the ball dropped to Inih Effiong whose shot was deflected just wide. Midway through the half John Kyriacou set up James Potton, who rounded Matthews and pulled the ball back to Kyriacou who blazed the ball over the bar from just inside the area. Darren Purse then got on the edge of a corner from Richard Graham but headed over. Late in the game Weymouth threatened for the first time when Isaac Vassell broke away down the right, drew Shane Gore but lifted his shot well off target. Vassell then tried his luck on the other side but shot past the far post from the edge of the area. That was the last of the action as the game petered out.
