Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Daniel Brathwaite

A single goal on the stroke of half-time gave Chesham the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup for the first time in six years.

With Chesham playing their fourth game in seven days and with the reserves playing the same night, the club’s resources were stretched to the limit. In the end Shane Gore, Dave Fotheringham and Alex Brown were rested while Darren Purse was an unused substitute. Danny Gordon played despite being released in February, as the club still held his league registration. Beaconsfield’s squad of sixteen were all first-team players. The attendance of 91 was the lowest for a Chesham game this season. Chesham had an early scare in the second minute, Jon-Jo Bates firing in a shot that came off the body of Haydn Dodge and onto the crossbar and away. Chesham came into the game with John Kyriacou crossing just ahead of Chris Dillon, then Toby Little crossed and Chris Dillon’s shot on the turn was straight at keeper James Reading. On the half-hour Bruce Wilson’s corner was cleared back to him, and the resulting cross was headed goalwards by Toby Little but Reading made a fine diving save. At the other end Zak Joseph’s shot crept under Dodge’s body and behind for a corner, which was cleared and Chesham broke away, Richard Graham and Chris Dillon both having shots blocked in quick succession. As chances continued to come at both ends, Zak Joseph pulled the ball back from the left and Haydn Dodge cleared as far as James McCluskey whose shot was headed away by Daniel Brathwaite. Joseph then had a shot which took a deflection and bounced just wide, then Toby Little broke away down the middle but shot over the bar with only Reading to beat. However as the first half moved into stoppage time Bruce Wilson’s corner was cleared as far as the edge of the penalty area, Chris Dillon shot on the turn and the ball deflected off Daniel Brathwaite into the net for the game’s only goal.

Early in the second half James McCluskey’s free kick was turned round the post by Haydn Dodge, then Dodge pushed a shot from Nathan Webb onto the top of the bar. Chesham opted to sit on their lead and conserve as much energy as possible, and Beaconsfield had much more of the ball in the second half. However Chesham’s defence was only threatened on a couple of occasions, when the ball flew across the area without anyone being able to get a touch. Chesham threatened to score a second in the last minute of normal time, but Toby Little could not control James Potton’s through ball.
