Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Darren Purse

Chesham’s run of thirteen successive wins came to an end on a disappointing night. Chesham were unrecognisable from the team that thrashed Bideford on Saturday, failing to muster a worthwhile effort on goal in the entire ninety minutes, but still might have secured a draw but for a late scrambled goal. Chesham have only failed to score three times this season, and two of those games were against Poole.

With Laurie Stewart not fit enough to start Chesham were unchanged. The early stages were uneventful with both defences looking comfortable. On the quarter-hour Shane Gore was forced to parry a powerful drive from Jon Davies, but that was the full extent of the early action. On the half-hour Darren Purse headed out a cross to Steve Devlin whose shot flew a couple of yards wide. As half-time approached Shane Gore twice denied Luke Burbidge, but neither side built up any serious pressure in the half.

On the hour mark Alex Brown headed wide from a James Potton free kick, but fell awkwardly and had to be replaced by Jeanmal Prosper. Midway through the half a cross from Jordan Chiedozie came to Marvin Brooks at the far post, but his attempted chip flew well over the bar. After 78 minutes another Chiedozie cross came to Ekow Elliott who controlled and shot but Darren Purse cleared off the line. A draw was of little use to either side, and in the last quarter-hour Poole began to build up some pressure for the first time in the game. Five minutes from time Ekow Elliott set up Michael Charles whose shot was turned behind by Shane Gore, and Steve Devlin’s corner fell at the feet of Ekow Elliott who shot into the corner of the net for the winning goal. Chesham tried to put pressure on late in the game, but their best moment came when Toby Little’s cross just eluded Chris Dillon and Darren Purse.
