Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Alex Brown

Chesham’s remarkable run carries on and on. Bideford may have slipped in recent weeks but they are still a top-half team, yet before the hour mark Chesham were four goals up and could even have added to their tally late on. This result means that Chesham cannot finish any lower than second, and have their fate in their own hands as four more wins will clinch the league title.

For the first time in eight games there was a change to the starting line-up, Alex Brown coming in for the injured Laurie Stewart. Youngster Bobby Pratt travelled with the squad as Daniel Brathwaite played for the reserves. After a quiet opening twelve minutes Chesham took the lead with a set-piece goal, Bruce Wilson floating in a free kick from the right touchline to the far post where Alex Brown rose to loop a header over keeper Steve Oliver for his first goal for the club. Six minutes later a mishit clearance from Oliver was collected by James Potton, Drew Roberts shot and the ball came off a defender to Chris Dillon who netted but was flagged offside, the referee confirming with the linesman that Dillon was offside when Roberts shot. Chesham’s defence contained the home attack but there was little action at the other end, although James Potton pulled the ball back from the left just ahead of the incoming Drew Roberts. Chesham made it 2-0 after 39 minutes with another set-piece goal, this time Bruce Wilson’s right-wing corner was headed down by Brown at the far post and Drew Roberts swept the ball home for his 40th goal of the season. Bideford came close to pulling a goal back in stoppage time when Chris McGrath got his head to a Steven Reed corner, but John Kyriacou chested the ball off the line.

Two minutes into the second half Drew Roberts got to the by-line on the right and pulled the ball back, and James Potton had time to control and fire into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. The home team had long since been reduced to shouting hopefully for a penalty, but they had a strong case shortly afterwards when Alex Brown grappled with Kevin Squire in the area but the referee gave nothing. On 57 minutes Drew Roberts laid the ball off, Bruce Wilson played it forward and James Potton ran on to slot the ball past the advancing keeper for Chesham’s fourth. Midway through the half a Bruce Wilson corner was headed out, and Alex Brown could have had another goal but his shot was pushed round the post by Oliver. After 74 minutes James Potton found space on the left and his shot was parried by Oliver, and Inih Effiong stabbed the loose ball wide from ten yards. Chesham were still looking the more likely to score, Chris Dillon finding space on the right and advancing to shoot straight at Oliver. However Bideford managed a consolation goal on 88 minutes, Craig Duff winning the ball on the right and setting up Richard Groves who found the net with a rising drive from 25 yards.
