Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Scott Thomas

Chesham took their run of consecutive wins to eleven with another hard-fought victory. Once again the conditions were not made for good football, but Chesham rarely looked in trouble after taking the lead early in the second half.

Once again the starting line-up was unchanged, Richard Graham coming off the bench to make his first appearance for the club in nearly twelve years. The pitch was hard, bumpy and bare in patches and there was a strong wind, all of which meant that the ball spent much of the time in the air. The opening stages were fairly dull, and the entertainment value was not helped by the ball having to be replaced four times early on for being flat or out of shape. On the quarter-hour James Potton hit a snap shot over the bar from just outside the box, then at the other end Jermaine Hylton’s shot was turned behind by Shane Gore although it was going wide anyway. Just before the half-hour mark a Drew Roberts free kick forced home keeper Bradley Catlow to dive to his right to save. At this stage it looked as if there was little chance of a goal at either end, so it was a surprise when both teams scored before half-time. After 40 minutes Omari Sterling- James got to the by-line on the right and pulled the ball back for Ashley Sammons to drive into the far corner of the net to give Redditch the lead. Four minutes later James Potton latched onto Scott Thomas’ pass and drove towards the by-line on the right only to be tripped by Joel Caines. It was a clear penalty and Drew Roberts drove the ball low into the net to equalise.

In the second half Chesham had both the slope and the wind in their favour, and dominated the early stages. Four minutes after the restart a quick break saw James Potton set up Drew Roberts who finished neatly past the advancing keeper for Chesham’s winner. Shortly afterwards John Kyriacou broke forward and set up Dave Fotheringham whose low shot was saved by Catlow diving to his right. James Potton’s quick free kick set Toby Little forward to shoot just past the far post, then Chesham broke away after a home corner was cleared, Bruce Wilson playing a one-two with Drew Roberts and advancing on goal but Catlow just got to the ball first. Eleven minutes from time Redditch had their best moment of the half, Jermaine Hylton trying a curling shot from the left which flew just past the far post. Two minutes from the end of normal time a bad bounce let in sub Jamie Molyneux on the left, but Shane Gore came smartly out of his goal to block. After that Chesham saw out the game, and could have had a third in stoppage time when Inih Effiong’s shot forced a fingertip save from Catlow.
