Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Drew Roberts

Chesham secured a narrow win over a Frome side who are much improved since the reverse fixture in December. The conditions meant that this was never likely to be a classic, but Chesham squeezed home thanks to the dismissal of Frome’s Rhys Baggridge and a schoolboy error by visiting keeper Darren Chitty.

Chesham’s team was unchanged from the win over Banbury eleven days before. Chesham had a strong wind in their favour in the first half and took control of the game early on. After nine minutes a Drew Roberts free kick bounced away off the defensive wall to John Kyriacou who broke forward and shot past the far post. Frome’s first attack came in the twentieth minute when Ricky Hulbert chested the ball down into the path of Matt Groves whose shot was parried by Shane Gore. With the conditions not helping either side and Frome concentrating on containment, there was little entertainment on offer. Chris Dillon’s pass found Drew Roberts who shot across goal, but there was little sign of a goal until Chesham unexpectedly took the lead in the 44th minute. John Kyriacou’s long free kick was turned back across goal by Chris Dillon and Daniel Brathwaite was pushed in the back as he rose to challenge for the ball, Drew Roberts confidently converting the penalty.

With the wind in their favour Frome went on the attack after the interval, and equalised in the 55th minute. Ben Wood’s long free kick was turned back across goal by Baggridge and Matt Groves converted at the near post. At this stage Frome looked the more likely winners but the course of the game was changed just after the hour mark. Drew Roberts turned Rhys Baggridge and set off for goal only to be hauled to the ground, and Baggridge could have little complaint at being shown a second yellow card. Worse was to come for the visitors from the resulting free kick which James Potton lofted into the penalty area, and the ball brushed off Drew Roberts and defender Tim Stephenson straight at Chitty who somehow allowed the ball to creep between his legs and over the line. The game started to open up, Frome’s Matt Smith having a shot deflected over the bar after a long throw was headed out, then Drew Roberts robbed Kris Miller in the Frome area but Chitty saved the resulting shot. Eleven minutes from time Shane Gore tipped over a header from sub Jack Wallis from Jon Vance’s free kick. However Frome failed to put the Chesham defence under serious pressure late on, and Chesham could have had a third but Chris Dillon could not connect properly with Drew Roberts’ driven cross. Frome’s last threat came when Mark Cooper’s cross was caught by the wind, forcing Shane Gore to tip over.
