Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Mark Lambert

This game went according to the form book as Chesham beat struggling Totton. Chesham dominated the game from first to last but missed a host of chances, and it seemed as if they would have to rely on a fortunate goal before Drew Roberts wrapped the game up in stoppage time.

The only change to the team saw Alex Brown make way for 36-year-old former Premiership defender Darren Purse, who signed for the club last week following a spell playing in Finland. Purse gave a dominant performance albeit not against the most demanding opposition. Chesham had an early chance when Ryan Hill’s mistake let in Toby Little who worked the ball onto his right foot and shot wide with only keeper Steve Mowthorpe to beat. Three minutes later Totton had their best chance, when Zac Mouland set up Alex Moth inside the area but Moth missed his kick. However Chesham were in control of the game and Bruce Wilson squared to Drew Roberts who scuffed his shot wide, then Wilson crossed from the right to Chris Dillon who slid in but could only help the ball into the arms of Mowthorpe. Totton were content to sit back and rely on the occasional long ball, and Ryan Hill punted the ball forward for Luke Roberts to head over. On 26 minutes James Potton ran through onto Chris Dillon’s lay-off and slotted the ball past Mowthorpe but also past the post. Two minutes later Chesham took the lead in fortunate circumstances, when James Potton’s mishit cross from the left looped over Mowthorpe and into the net at the far post. In the next minute Drew Roberts broke down the right and crossed to Chris Dillon at the far post, but Chris Onoufriou got back to clear off the line. Totton broke away and James Jennings shot high and wide from the edge of the area, but Chesham were still looking more likely to score. John Kyriacou and Bruce Wilson combined to set up James Potton whose shot was parried by Mowthorpe, then the resulting corner was taken short and Chris Dillon stretched but was unable to meet John Kyriacou’s cross. In the closing minutes of the half Drew Roberts crossed from the right and the ball came back off the far post, then a neat move set up Drew Roberts whose shot hit Toby Little and flew wide.

Early in the second half a scramble in the home goalmouth ended when Drew Roberts shot across goal, and James Potton met the ball beyond the far post but blazed over. On 55 minutes Toby Little’s cross was cleared as far as Drew Roberts whose shot was blocked at the expense of a corner. The home side then had their only moment of danger in the second half, when Alex Moth found the overlapping Andrew Bridge who mishit his shot wide from the edge of the area. Midway through the half Rob Flooks, who had been booked in the first half after an altercation with Chris Dillon, hacked down Drew Roberts and was shown a second yellow card. Sub Steve Wales crossed from the left to Chris Dillon who headed wide, Dillon set up Drew Roberts who shot wide from the edge of the area, then Steve Wales pulled the ball back to James Potton whose shot appeared to be deflected over although the referee gave a goal kick. Potton pulled the ball back from the right and Chris Dillon laid it back to Dave Fotheringham who had two efforts blocked, then Chris Dillon shot across goal from close range. The home team were reduced to pumping the ball hopefully forward and screamed for a penalty when Darren Purse headed clear despite Taylor Edwards backing into him, but the referee rightly was having none of it. Two minutes into stoppage time Steve Wales pulled the ball back from the left, Chris Dillon laid it off and Drew Roberts thumped it into the net to seal the win.
