Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Steve Wales

This dramatic draw means that Chesham have conceded eight goals in the last three matches which have yielded only two points. Chesham looked to be well in control of this game but allowed the visitors back into the game just before half-time. A combination of was this and the twenty-minute delay at the start of the second half meant that the second half was a different affair, but Chesham could still have won the game late on.

Illness meant that John Kyriacou was missing from the team for the first time this season, so Mark Lambert switched to right-back and Alex Brown started in the centre of defence. Chesham made the stronger start and in the third minute Steve Wales crossed back in after a corner was cleared and Alex Brown headed wide at the far post. At the other end Luis Medina cut in from the left and shot wide of the near post, but otherwise Chesham were dominant. After eight minutes Chesham were denied a blatant penalty when Chris Dillon was pushed in the back by Andre Maltey. Inih Effiong was clean through but keeper Jack Bonham saved, Effiong collected the loose ball and crossed to Chris Dillon who controlled and shot into the side netting. Toby Little then set up Inih Effiong who shot over from 25 yards, but after 25 minutes Effiong seized on a stray pass from Medina and set up Chris Dillon who slotted the ball past Bonham to give Chesham the lead. James Potton then found space on the left and his angled drive cannoned away off Bonham, then in a rare breakaway Joseph N’Guessan’s shot was turned behind by Shane Gore. In the next minute James Potton’s long ball sent Inih Effiong through to shoot wide with only Bonham to beat. However on 36 minutes Potton’s fine through ball sent Toby Little down the left, and Little’s low cross was turned into his own net by Kevin M’Bala. Chesham were in total command of the game, but on 44 minutes Medina broke down the visitors’ left and set up N’Guessan who slotted past the advancing Shane Gore to halve the deficit. In the next minute M’Bala slipped and let in Inih Effiong who drilled the ball into the net but was pulled up for a foul.

The second half was delayed by twenty minutes after a spectator was taken ill at half-time, and when the game resumed it was a different matter entirely. In the second minute N’Guessan broke away down the right and Shane Gore spread himself to save, then James Daly’s cross was turned in by Medina at the near post who was flagged offside. Medina was booked for taking his shirt off in premature celebration, and was fortunate to escape a second yellow card three minutes later after a blatant dive. On 55 minutes M’Bala glanced on a Luke Abraham corner and Shane Gore turned the ball behind, then at the other end a Steve Wales cross was headed out to Chris Dillon whose shot produced a great save from Bonham. Jonny McNamara broke away but was denied by a great tackle from Danny Gordon, then M’Bala got his head to a Luke Abraham free kick but Gore saved. Chesham started to come back into the game and Inih Effiong shot just wide of the near post, then Effiong headed over from a Steve Wales corner. A Scott Thomas free kick was helped on by Alex Brown but Bonham saved at the feet of Chris Dillon, then Daniel Brathwaite broke down the left and crossed low to Drew Roberts who side-footed wide. Chesham looked at this stage as if they would see the game out, but on 88 minutes a misdirected header from Scott Thomas set up N’Guessan who fired home the equaliser. However there was more drama to come, and in the first minute of stoppage time Bruce Wilson’s ball forward was flicked by Drew Roberts into the path of Steve Wales who shot past Bonham to make it 3-2. In the next minute James Hatch threaded a pass into the path of Jonny McNamara on the left, and McNamara ran on to side-foot the ball past Shane Gore and into the net at the far post for a second equaliser.
