Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: John Kyriacou

Chesham lost top spot in the league and have now lost three matches in a row. After taking an early lead Chesham rarely looked like scoring again, but neither did Burnham until Chesham were reduced to ten men by an extraordinary refereeing decision.

The only change to the starting line-up saw Inih Effiong come in as an extra striker in place of James Potton. With Mark Lambert suspended Chesham had only four substitutes. Chesham took the lead in the seventh minute with a spectacular goal from Dave Fotheringham, whose shot from fully 40 yards caught out keeper Michael Watkins and dipped under the bar. That was almost the only noteworthy action in a dull first half, as Chesham comfortably contained the Burnham attack but struggled to make any headway at the other end. Burnham’s only shot of the half came from Nick Kademba just after the half-hour but was well off target, while Chesham came closest was when Ashley Smith cut out a cross from Steve Wales and was relieved to see the ball just clear his own bar.

Early in the second half Burnham started to push forward more, and on the hour mark Ashley Smith broke forward and hit a left-foot shot that flew past the far post. Two minutes later the course of the game changed when Bruce Wilson brought down Ryan Blake on the edge of the area, which the referee somehow deemed worthy of a red card even though two other defenders were covering. Smith hit the resulting free kick miles over the bar, but Chesham were still adjusting when Lewis Driver ran through the defence to equalise three minutes later. This forced Chesham to come out more, but the fluency of recent weeks has gone and they failed to test Watkins again - in fact neither keeper made a noteworthy save in the entire game. Burnham had more of the possession late on but did not look like scoring until the last minute of normal time, when Joseph Maloney’s right-wing cross was headed in at the near post by Ryan Blake for the winner.
