Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: John Kyriacou

Chesham went out of the FA Trophy to a much-improved Hungerford team. Chesham dominated the opening half-hour but conceded against the run of play, and after that Hungerford continued to keep Chesham at bay and added a second in stoppage time.

The only change saw Dave Fotheringham return to the side in place of Scott Thomas who was only fit enough for a place on the bench, while Hungerford’s squad showed eight changes from the league meeting three months before. Chesham started the game well and missed a great chance after four minutes, when Chris Dillon challenged for a John Kyriacou cross and the ball dropped to Steve Wales who stabbed the ball wide from six yards. Five minutes later Wales won a tackle midway inside the home half and set off for goal, but home keeper Paul Strudley dived to push away the resulting shot. Hungerford threatened for the first time when Luke Brewer headed wide from a Mark Draycott cross, but Chesham continued to look the more likely to score. A Chris Dillon shot was turned behind by Strudley, who then parried a fierce effort from Steve Wales. However it was the home side who took the lead just after the half-hour, when Dean Stow’s ball forward enabled Mark Draycott to lift the ball over the advancing Shane Gore. Chesham lost momentum, and eight minutes later a home corner dropped in the Chesham area and Stefan Brown’s shot on the turn went wide.

Early in the second half James Potton found Drew Roberts whose shot from the left forced Strudley to dive to his left to save. Chesham were back in control of the game and just before the hour mark Chris Dillon’s first-time shot flew over after Drew Roberts had chested down a Steve Wales cross. Midway through the half a Bruce Wilson free kick was partially cleared, James Potton crossed back in and the ball dropped to Laurie Stewart whose snap shot flew well wide. As the game went on the home side were content to sit back and contain, and Chesham continued to push forward but without success. Late in the game Chesham threw caution to the wind and brought on Alex Brown to roam around up front, and Hungerford looked to take advantage on the break. In the second minute of stoppage time Stefan Brown found Dean Stow down the home right, and Stow’s cross-shot took a deflection and looped over Shane Gore into the net to seal the win.
