Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Chesham’s 15-game unbeaten run came to an end as they failed to score for the first time this season. After taking an early lead Poole tried fair means or foul to stop Chesham playing, which they achieved although they were helped by a second goal that was a gift from the Chesham defence.

Chesham were unchanged after Shane Gore recovered from Saturday’s injury, although former youth team keeper Tom Gowans was on the bench as a precaution. Poole made the stronger start although there was more than an element of good fortune about their opening goal on eight minutes. Keith Emmerson tried his luck from way out on the right, and his luck was in as the ball looped over Shane Gore into the far corner of the net. Chesham began to come into the game, and on 19 minutes were awarded a penalty for a push on Chris Dillon in the area. It looked a foul although it was the sort that defenders often get away with, but that did not excuse the actions of the visitors who had two players booked for arguing and manager Tom Killick sent to the stands for calling the referee a cheat. In any case Steve Wales’ kick bounced away off the legs of keeper Nick Hutchings, the fifth penalty that Chesham have missed this season. Three minutes later Bruce Wilson cut in from the right and shot towards the near post but Hutchings saved. Poole’s approach was summed up when Will Spetch was booked for barging into the back of Chris Dillon, and the game threatened to boil over shortly afterwards when Jamie Whisken was shown a yellow card for a trip on Drew Roberts. Chesham had a brief spell of pressure and Chris Dillon challenged for a Daniel Brathwaite cross, the ball dropped to James Potton but Hutchings was able to save, then Steve Wales drilled the ball across goal from wide on the right. However Poole broke away and Keith Emmerson sent Carl Preston clear but Shane Gore came out of his goal to make a smart save from the resulting shot.

Early in the second half Steve Wales took a free kick out on the right, Daniel Brathwaite played the ball back in from the far post and Danny Gordon was just unable to turn it in from close range. The mood of the home fans was not helped when Scott Thomas brought down Carl Preston, who writhed on the ground in apparent agony then got up and carried on without treatment. Poole played five men across the back and flooded the midfield, but occasionally looked dangerous on the break. Dan Cann hit a snap shot that flew just wide, then Preston’s low shot was turned away by Shane Gore. Midway through the half Preston picked up Poole’s sixth yellow card of the evening for a foul on Bruce Wilson, but Drew Roberts’ free kick failed to trouble Hutchings. On 78 minutes Chesham’s defence hesitated over a hopeful through ball, which enabled Marvin Brooks to lob over Shane Gore and stroke the ball into the unguarded net. This killed the game although Hutchings punched a Toby Little corner onto the top of the bar late on, then in stoppage time Hutchings saved a shot on the turn from Inih Effiong.
