Chesham reached the last 64 of the FA Trophy for the second season running with a comfortable victory. Chesham were the better side in the first half after taking an early lead, but the second half was scrappy until Chesham wrapped up the win with two late goals.

The team was unchanged from last Saturday’s draw at Truro. Chesham took control of the game from the start and took the lead in the fourth minute. From a throw on the right the ball was played in to Bruce Wilson inside the area, and Wilson laid the ball into the path of Drew Roberts whose shot from just inside the box beat home keeper Craig Holloway at his near post. Laurie Stewart headed over from a Steve Wales free kick, then Drew Roberts pulled the ball back from the left and Steve Wales volleyed first-time wide of the near post. Margate threatened for the first time when Matt Bodkin’s cross was headed over by Phil Walsh, but Chesham resumed control of the game. A Steve Wales free kick into the area came off the head of a home defender but Holloway was able to save, then James Potton set up Chris Dillon whose shot was blocked by Richard Avery. Potton then moved onto a Steve Wales through ball and attempted to lob Holloway but the keeper stretched to palm the ball behind, then from a short corner James Potton crossed low and Drew Roberts came in at the far post but shot over. After 44 minutes the home side came close for the only time in the game, when Warren Whitely crossed from the right and Charles Ademeno’s header was touched onto the bar by Shane Gore.

Early in the second half Matt Bodkin nearly presented Chesham with a second with a back-pass across goal, but Holloway saved his side with a sliding tackle on Drew Roberts. Chesham lost some of their first-half fluency and with Margate offering little of their own, the game dipped in quality. Midway through the half Drew Roberts shot high and wide from a Steve Wales cross, then a John Kyriacou cross was cleared to Drew Roberts whose shot was blocked. Eleven minutes from time home sub George Whitelock unleashed a powerful shot that Shane Gore parried, but apart from that the Chesham defence was untroubled. Two minutes from time Drew Roberts pulled the ball back from the left, Holloway pushed the ball out then stretched out an arm to block Chris Dillon’s close-range effort. In the last minute of normal time Steve Wales crossed from the right, Drew Roberts controlled and drove into the corner of the net to seal the win. There were six minutes of additional time in which Shane Gore dived to his right to keep out Georges Ehui’s free kick, then Scott Thomas headed the ball forward and Chris Dillon set up Steve Wales who completed the scoring with a well-judged chip over the advancing keeper.
