Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Scott Thomas

Chesham moved to the top of the table with this win over the league’s bottom team. Chesham totally dominated the opening 75 minutes but failed to secure the second goal that would have wrapped the game up, which gave the home side the prospect of snatching an improbable draw late on.

Chesham’s starting line-up was unchanged, fit-again Mark Lambert coming in for James Beasant on the bench. Bashley have cut their wage budget to nil and their team showed eight changes from the corresponding fixture eight weeks ago. Chesham controlled the game from the off but did not create their first chance until 14 minutes, when Steve Wales’ low cross came off Brad Strickland to Drew Roberts whose shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle. In the next minute Wales cut in from the right and fed Chris Dillon who slotted the ball past keeper Nic Jones for the game’s only goal. Four minutes later James Potton ran at the heart of the home defence and set up Dillon but Jones parried and held the ball at the second attempt. Chesham were still in total control and Bashley had only one effort on goal in the half, a tame shot from Jack Odam that Shane Gore saved comfortably. Late in the half a Bruce Wilson corner was cleared only as far as Steve Wales whose shot was deflected wide, then John Kyriacou broke forward and set up Drew Roberts whose left-foot drive produced a fine reaction save from Jones.

Early in the second half a right-wing run from James Potton set up Drew Roberts but Jones came out to block, then Roberts curled a shot just wide of the far post. John Kyriacou was seeing plenty of the ball on the right, and played a one-two with James Potton but failed to get any power into his shot and Jones saved. Chesham forced a succession of corners which came to nothing, and on 63 minutes Chris Dillon crossed to Drew Roberts whose effort was saved by Jones and the loose ball scrambled away. Roberts then headed over from a Steve Wales cross, then James Potton’s lay-off set up John Kyriacou who fired the ball across goal. After 77 minutes Bashley won their first corner, but it was easily cleared and Steve Wales ran three-quarters of the length of the pitch only for Jones to save at Wales’ feet. By now Chesham were becoming frustrated at their failure to wrap the game up, and could have paid the penalty when Jack Satterley ran into the Chesham area only to pull his shot past the far post. The home side drew encouragement from this and began to put pressure on Chesham for the first time in the game. In stoppage time Scott Joyce tried his luck from 30 yards with a shot that was well-struck but comfortably dealt with by Shane Gore, and Chesham saw out the game with no further alarms.
