Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Drew Roberts

After an opening half performance that was indifferent to say the least, Chesham turned on the style after the interval and finished convincing winners.

There were five changes to the team in the interests of squad rotation, with starts for James Beasant, Toby Little, Laurie Stewart, Alex Brown and Inih Effiong. Chesham could have taken a second-minute lead, when John Kyriacou attempted to chip Ed Thompson from just inside the opposition half but the keeper got back to tip over. However Chesham struggled to get going, and after eight minutes Brad Wadkins intercepted John Kyriacou’s back-pass but Josh Hutchinson failed to anticipate Wadkins’ back-heel. After 14 minutes a sweeping move saw John Kyriacou feed Steve Wales who crossed low, but Drew Roberts could only shoot over the bar from ten yards. However the visitors looked more likely to score, and Fabian Simms broke forward and set up Josh Hutchinson whose shot was parried by James Beasant, and Dan Ailey tapped in the loose ball but was flagged offside. Ailey then broke clear and rounded Beasant but took the ball too wide and Danny Gordon got back to clear, then Matt Clifford broke down the left and found Tom Laxton whose ball into the box was turned over the bar by Hutchinson. Chesham came back and Drew Roberts had a shot parried by Thompson, who then stretched to hold a header from James Potton. However the visitors had another good chance when Ben Bowditch crossed into the area towards the head of Wesley Beckles who missed the ball altogether.

Two minutes into the second half Potters Bar had their best chance when Josh Hutchinson fired wide with only James Beasant to beat. Chesham had hardly looked like scoring but on 53 minutes Steve Wales broke forward and found Inih Effiong, whose shot hit Thompson and rebounded to James Potton who shot low into the corner of the net to give Chesham the lead. Six minutes later Potton broke away down the right and crossed low for Drew Roberts to score at the near post. The game had now completely changed and on 63 minutes Drew Roberts raced clear onto Inih Effiong’s flick, and Wesley Beckles eventually brought Roberts down after about four attempts. Roberts himself blasted home the penalty to make the game safe. Chesham were now running the opposition ragged, and a long run from Steve Wales sent Inih Effiong clear to blast over. Wales broke away down the right but crossed just too far in front of the advancing Chris Dillon, then a cross from Toby Little was sliced towards his own net by Sean Grace but Thompson saved his blushes with a diving save. Potters Bar nearly grabbed a consolation when Bowditch crossed from the right but two forwards converged and the ball went wide of the near post. Nine minutes from time Toby Little sent Chris Dillon clear to dummy Thompson, then score with a lob that the keeper got a hand to but could not keep out. Six minutes from time Matt Clifford, who had earlier been booked for a foul on Bruce Wilson, was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Steve Wales. In the 89th minute Steve Wales broke away down the right and pulled the ball back to Jack Harris, who had come on for his senior debut only four minutes earlier, and who found the net with a neat finish at the near post.
