Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Drew Roberts

Chesham achieved their second 3-0 home win in four days, only on this occasion they will get to keep the points. Cambridge came into this game on a run of five wins in a row, but lost at the Meadow for the fourth season running without registering a goal.

Chesham’s starting line-up and bench were unchanged from Saturday. In the second minute a long-range effort from Steve Wales beat keeper Zac Barrett but clipped the outside of the post, but apart from that the opening stages were largely uneventful. On the half-hour Steve Wales curled another shot just wide from Chris Dillon’s lay-off, but in the next minute Chesham took the lead with a well-worked goal. John Kyriacou broke forward and threaded a perfect pass into the path of Steve Wales who shot low into the corner of the net from just inside the area. However Chesham’s second goal seven minutes later was a gift, as Will Lawton’s clearance hit a team-mate and rebounded into the path of Drew Roberts, who slipped the ball through the legs of the advancing Barrett into the net. Chesham could have had a third goal before half-time when Drew Roberts ran through from an onside position onto John Kyriacou’s pass, but the linesman flagged for offside against Chris Dillon.

Shortly after half-time Bruce Wilson came on for Dave Fotheringham, who was unable to run off an injury sustained in the first half. However in the next minute Drew Roberts again outpaced the Cambridge defence to get to John Kyriacou’s through ball, only to be tripped as he attempted to go past Barrett. By the letter of the law the keeper had to go, but replacement Will Lawton pushed Drew Roberts’ penalty onto the post and grabbed the rebound, apparently from behind the line but the linesman’s view was obstructed and the goal was not given. Drew Roberts then shot straight at the keeper from Steve Wales’ crossfield ball, Bruce Wilson shot just over from 30 yards, then Steve Wales collected another rebound but shot wide with only Lawton to beat. Midway through the half Cambridge had a spell of pressure and Josh Dawkin had a shot deflected behind, then John Kyriacou headed off the line from Lee Chaffey although the ball seemed to be going wide anyway. On 74 minutes James Potton exchanged passes with Chris Dillon and beat Lawton at his near post to make it 3-0 and kill the game as a contest. Late in the game Drew Roberts ran clear onto a through ball from Scott Thomas but Lawton just got to the ball first, then a long-range effort from Chris Dillon flew just over.
