Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Drew Roberts

Once again Chesham failed to defeat lower-division opposition in the FA Cup. As half-time approached Chesham were a goal to the good and well in control of the game, but Royston’s equaliser changed the course of the afternoon, which reverted to the usual FA Cup pattern of Chesham losing fluency and becoming too tentative.

Scott Thomas was kept out by the injury sustained last Saturday, so Steve Wales returned to the starting line-up. Chesham took control of the game from the start and in the fourth minute Drew Roberts’ dummy set up Chris Dillon but keeper George Lawton rushed from his goal to save. From a short corner routine Toby Little crossed and Drew Roberts’ header was deflected behind, then Steve Wales dispossessed Tom Pepper and set off for goal but his shot was parried by Lawton. James Potton hooked the ball wide after Drew Roberts had chested down a Bruce Wilson cross, but in the fifteenth minute Toby Little broke forward and Chris Dillon’s pass set up Drew Roberts for a shot into the roof of the net from just inside the area. Roberts then forced Lawton to tip over a shot from just outside the box, then a surging run from James Potton set up Roberts but Lawton spread himself to save. On the half-hour Royston had their first effort on goal, a long-range effort from Rob Mason that dipped just over, but Chesham were still in control of the game and another short corner routine ended with Steve Wales shooting just over. However in the 44th minute Ryan Ingrey played the ball down the right for Ryan Lockett who was adjudged onside, and Lockett squared for the unmarked Rob Mason to equalise.

The goal changed the game as Chesham’s easy-flowing style deserted them. Four minutes after the restart a short back-pass from Mark Lambert let in Ross Collins but he took too long and Shane Gore was able to save. At the other end a Bruce Wilson corner was headed up in the air and Laurie Stewart appeared to be pushed as he went for the loose ball, then Steve Wales crossed from the left and Chris Dillon’s far-post header was just over. Just after the hour mark a long clearance from Shane Gore was helped on by Chris Dillon to James Potton who fired well over from the edge of the area. Royston began to take advantage of Chesham’s hesitancy and on 71 minutes Tom Pepper crossed to Rob Mason who headed wide of the far post. In a scrappy finale Drew Roberts set up Toby Little who shot high and wide, then at the other end Ryan Lockett headed across goal to Rob Mason who blasted over. The tie seemed to be heading for a replay but in the last minute of normal time Rob Mason crossed from the right, Ryan Lockett’s header was parried by Shane Gore but Lockett netted from the rebound to knock Chesham out.
