Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Chesham turned on the style with this convincing win. Bashley may have dropped to the bottom of the table after this reverse, but they will probably have better days than this as few teams could have lived with Chesham in this form.

Chris Dillon and Drew Roberts returned to the starting line-up in place of Steve Wales and Inih Effiong. In the first minute Bashley’s Josh Casey took a free kick which was cleared as far as Dave Allen whose shot came through a crowd of players onto the post. Had that effort gone in it might have changed the game, but Chesham were soon into their stride with Drew Roberts crossing low from the right to Chris Dillon whose effort was parried by keeper Nic Jones. After 12 minutes Chris Dillon flicked on a long ball and Roberts stole in behind the defence to shoot into the roof of the net to give Chesham the lead. Two minutes later James Potton’s ball sent John Kyriacou clear on the right and his cross was headed against the bar by Chris Dillon. Chesham dominated the rest of the half and Bashley’s defence was stretched, but restricted the home team to two more chances. Drew Roberts crossed low and James Potton seemed certain to score but a defender just got in a challenge, then Roberts seized on a wayward pass in the Bashley area and his shot was kicked away by Jones for a corner.

Early in the second half Bashley had a spell of possession but only managed a shot from Charlie Knight that was comfortably saved by Shane Gore. Bashley keeper Nic Jones then injured himself taking a goal kick, but the visitors had a substitute goalkeeper in Nick Thomas. However Thomas had only been on the pitch for five minutes when his clearance was blocked by Chris Dillon, who walked the ball into the net to make it 2-0. Two minutes later a long free kick into the Chesham box dropped to Gary Middleton who shot over, but Chesham were now in control of the game and James Potton forced Thomas to dive to his right to save a well-struck shot. After 70 minutes Mark Lambert’s quickly-taken free kick sent John Kyriacou away down the right, and his low cross was turned in at the far post by Drew Roberts for Chesham’s third. On 77 minutes Jack Odam’s cross was pushed out by Shane Gore to Tim Sills who completely missed his kick. Six minutes from time Sam Boultwood reduced the arrears with a well-struck shot into the top corner, but two minutes later Inih Effiong’s lay-off enabled Toby Little to cross from the left and James Potton headed in at the far post to restore Chesham’s three-goal advantage. In stoppage time Inih Effiong shot left-footed and Thomas dived to his right to turn the ball away.
