Chesham made it three wins in a row with this success against struggling Hungerford. Chesham produced the few moments of quality in a scrappy game and could have won by a bigger margin, but one goal was always likely to be enough as the home team never looked like scoring.

Chesham’s starting line-up was unchanged, which meant that Chris Dillon and Drew Roberts had to make do with a place on the bench. Chesham played up the slope in the first half but soon took control of the game, and in the fifth minute James Potton’s surging run set up Inih Effiong who shot over the bar with only keeper Paul Strudley to beat. Six minutes later Steve Wales ran down the left and set up Bruce Wilson whose first-time shot beat Strudley but hit the far post. Midway through the half a Steve Wales free kick was headed out, Daniel Brathwaite turned it goalwards and James Potton’s effort was blocked. The game lacked fluency, Hungerford hitting the ball hopefully forward with little precision, while Chesham struggled to play passing football on a hard surface. On 34 minutes a shot on the turn from Steve Wales was just over, then on 44 minutes Chesham produced the winning goal with a rare flowing move. John Kyriacou won the ball in his own half, then supported Scott Thomas as he ran forward and set up Steve Wales who ran clear and stroked the ball past Strudley.

Early in the second half Inih Effiong side-footed just wide of the far post, then on 54 minutes a long through ball by Daniel Brathwaite was misjudged by Jon Boardman and Effiong missed his kick with just Strudley to beat. Just after the hour mark James Potton’s header from a Bruce Wilson corner was hacked off the line by Nick Stanley, then Inih Effiong’s shot was parried by Strudley and Steve Wales’ follow-up was blocked. After 75 minutes Hungerford had their first effort on goal, a header from Harry Goodger that flew comfortably over. Late in the game Bruce Wilson set up Toby Little who crossed but Chris Dillon was just beaten to the ball by a defender. The home side threw defender Jon Boardman forward late on, but he could only manage a speculative shot that was easily saved by Shane Gore.
