Chesham made it two wins in three days with a surprisingly comfortable victory against much-fancied St Albans. Chesham took an early lead and were much the better side throughout the game and should have won by a much bigger margin.

Chesham started brightly and could have taken the lead in the third minute when James Potton sent Steve Wales clear but keeper Paul Bastock came out to save. In the next minute Inih Effiong broke clear and rounded Bastock to slot home the game’s only goal. Chesham still pushed forward and on six minutes a long cross from Bruce Wilson on the left found Steve Wales who volleyed over. St Albans’ only moment of note in the half came after 17 minutes, when Lee Chappell’s left-wing cross was headed goalwards by John Frendo but Shane Gore dived to his left to save. Chesham continued to carry the greater threat but Inih Effiong was continually just a fraction offside, while at the other end Frendo worked hard with little support. Chesham had a great chance to double their lead on 38 minutes, when John Kyriacou’s ball forward found Bruce Wilson who chested down, Bastock saved and the ball came to James Potton who hooked the ball over the bar.

Early in the second half James Potton’s through ball sent Steve Wales clear but Bastock made a great save to his right. Potton then broke clear and squared to Effiong, the ball was blocked and Potton’s shot was cleared off the line by Ryan Wharton. Three minutes later Bruce Wilson and Steve Wales were both in the clear but got in each other’s way. Chesham continued to expose the lack of pace in St Albans’ back line, and after 66 minutes Inih Effiong was again in the clear but dwelt too long on the ball, then Toby Little squared from the right and the ball was just too far ahead of James Potton. Chesham could have paid for their failure to increase their lead when Shane Gore came out to claim the ball but was beaten to it by Frendo, who set up Layne Eadie but his shot on the turn went wide. After 72 minutes Laurie Stewart’s header from a Toby Little corner was tipped onto the bar by Bastock, then Inih Effiong was clean through but was wrongly flagged offside. James Potton collected the ball on the right touchline and ran through the entire St Albans defence but shot just wide, then Dave Fotheringham found Chris Watters on the right and his cross was met by Inih Effiong who put a free header wide. A cross from Toby Little then found Effiong who mistimed his header in front of goal. In the last minute of normal time Aston Goss pulled the ball back from the by-line on the right and James Comley slid in at the far post to knock the ball over the bar, but it would have been a travesty if the visitors had taken anything from the game.
