Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Inih Effiong

After two disappointing results Chesham returned to winning ways against a Stourbridge side who will surely be among this season’s front runners. In a game played at Redditch because Stourbridge’s home ground is still being used for cricket, Chesham deserved their win after a fine first-half performance. Stourbridge came back into the game thanks to two penalties but otherwise rarely looked like scoring.

Shan Gore was back in goal after missing the first two games with injury, and Bruce Wilson returned after missing the Arlesey game. Chris Dillon was on holiday, Drew Roberts injured and Toby Little not fit enough for a starting place, so Daniel Brathwaite, Dave Fotheringham and Inih Effiong came in. Leon Archer was on the bench as cover after re-signing for the club in midweek. Chesham were given the start they needed with a penalty in the fifth minute, when Inih Effiong stole the ball from Sean Geddes who tripped him just inside the area and Mark Lambert coolly put away the spot kick. Chesham were playing the neater football and on 15 minutes a good move down the left saw Bruce Wilson set up James Potton whose shot was saved by home keeper Dean Coleman. Stourbridge came back when Shane Gore punched out a Geddes free kick to Jordan Fitzpatrick who hooked over from the edge of the area. After 33 minutes Chesham again worked the ball down the left and Daniel Brathwaite threaded the ball through for Inih Effiong to slot past Coleman to make it 2-0. Shane Gore then made a fine save to keep out an angled drive from Ben Billingham, while at the other end a speculative effort from James Potton was just over, then Potton played in Steve Wales whose angled drive hit Coleman and bounced away. After 43 minutes Bruce Wilson found Inih Effiong on the left, and Effiong pulled the ball back from the by-line for James Potton to score Chesham’s third. In stoppage time Ben Billingham ran for the by-line on the home right and went down as Mark Lambert and Steve Wales challenged, and Sean Geddes blasted home the resulting penalty to give the home side a lifeline.

Early in the second half Luke Benbow had Stourbridge’s best chance when his attempted lob went over Shane Gore but also over the bar. On the hour mark the home side were awarded a second penalty, although the award seemed highly dubious as Dave Fotheringham cleared only to clip Billingham who was on his blind side. Geddes again converted but Stourbridge rarely threatened to score again. Chesham concentrated on preserving their lead, but in the 81st minute Bruce Wilson found Inih Effiong whose shot on the turn was tipped over by Coleman. Stourbridge’s last chance came after 85 minutes, when Shane Gore dived to keep out Luke Benbow’s shot. In stoppage time Effiong worked a shooting chance on the left but fired across goal.
