Midway through the second half it seemed as though Chesham, without being anywhere near their best, were well in control of the game against ten men who had an outfield player in goal. However Chesham relaxed and allowed Bideford to snatch a surprise equaliser, after which the visitors successfully killed the game and held on for a point.

With Shane Gore still injured Glenn Williamson made his first competitive start for the club after deputising in last week’s friendly. Chesham could have scored a freak goal in the third minute, when Toby Little’s cross took a deflection and came back off the bar. However three minutes later Bideford took a shock lead, Connor Clifford’s free kick taking a deflection off the wall which deceived Williamson. Chesham’s defence looked uncertain and three minutes later Clifford went on the overlap down the visitors’ left, and his ball across was cleared and Richard Groves’ follow-up blocked. Chesham had their first moment of note after 20 minutes when Steve Wales’ free kick was headed out and Drew Roberts shot just wide of the near post. Bideford’s Owen Howe then broke away and shot across goal, but Chesham equalised after 30 minutes when keeper Oliver misjudged a cross from Steve Wales and Drew Roberts headed in. Chesham then had their best spell of the game, Toby Little breaking forward and setting up Drew Roberts whose shot was just wide of the far post. Another run forward from Little sent Bruce Wilson clear but Oliver came out of his goal to save, then Steve Wales crossed from the left and James Potton was clearly pushed off the ball as he went to head in. In stoppage time Wales took a short corner and John Kyriacou’s cross saw James Potton glance a header just wide of the far post.

Chesham took the lead 45 seconds after the restart, when Bruce Wilson’s cross was headed out to the edge of the area and James Potton shot into the net past Oliver’s right hand. Eight minutes later Jack Furzer attempted to pass back to Oliver but Drew Roberts intercepted and the keeper brought him down to earn a red card, Craig Duff taking over in goal. Chesham eased off as if the game was won and were caught out on 58 minutes, when Saul Halpin collected a loose ball and sent Owen Howe clear to equalise. Two minutes later Howe fed Halpin whose shot was saved by Williamson, but after that Bideford shut up shop and were content to hold on. Drew Roberts crossed from the right to Chris Dillon whose header was saved and the follow-up blocked. After 76 minutes Toby Little’s long shot flew just wide, then a 35-yard effort from John Kyriacou had Duff beaten all ends up but hit the post. As time went on Chesham became frustrated by their inability to break through and by Bideford’s blatant time-wasting. However it was the visitors who nearly snatched it late on, when Laurie Stewart and Glenn Williamson hesitated over a long clearance which let in Ethan Phillips but his shot towards the empty net went harmlessly across goal.
