Chesham came away with a draw in a game that will probably be remembered most for a bizarre refereeing decision.

Chesham had a scare early on when the home side broke clear but Shane Gore made a fine double save. Chesham took the lead after 20 minutes when the home goalkeeper came for a cross from James Quinn, but Chris Dillon got there first and scored with a glancing header. Chesham were looking uncertain in defence and after 35 minutes John Kyriacou brought down Abbey's left-winger for a penalty which was converted. On 41 minutes Conner Baker rose at the far post to head home Bruce Wilson's right-wing corner, both teams turned towards the centre circle but Chesham's players were amazed to see that the referee had awarded a goal kick. The only possible explanation for the decision was that the official thought that the ball had hit the side netting, but it seemed obvious to everyone that it had gone in the net. On the stroke of half-time James Potton's shot with the outside of the foot was tipped away by the home keeper.

Waltham Abbey looked the more likely to score in the second half, Shane Gore scooping the ball away from a home forward's feet as he attempted to round the keeper. Midway through the half Chesham took a short corner and Steve Wales' cross was headed just over by Laurie Stewart. Late in the game sub keeper Jimmy Robins was forced to make a smart save as the home team again broke clear, then Chris Watters took a free kick on the Chesham left which reached Laurie Stewart but he could only prod the ball wide of the far post.
