Chesham United Man of the Match: Connor Wood

Chesham went down to their third defeat in eight days, during which time they have conceded twelve goals. The game was effectively decided by two quick goals shortly after half-time, after which Chesham never looked like retrieving the situation and let in a third goal in stoppage time.

Toby Little was ruled out by the injury sustained at Histon in the week, and John Kyriacou returned to St Albans after his loan spell came to an end, but Alex Brown was fit again so played in the centre of defence with Nick Beasant switching to striker, and Ashley Smith reverted to right back with Liam Malone coming into midfield after re-signing for the club. The other change saw Connor Wood return at left-back in place of Daniel Brathwaite. Chesham had the better of the early stages, Dave Pearce floating in a free kick that was just too high for Nick Beasant at the far post and Ashley Smith shooting over from the edge of the area. Midway through the half Tom McConway’s shot was blocked and the loose ball was fired goalwards by Dave Pearce but visiting keeper Kent Kauppinen parried. However Chippenham were to have the best chance of the half when James Guthrie crossed and the unmarked Charlie Griffin headed over the bar. Late in the half Mark Bell’s free kick seemed to have been taken by Kauppinen, but the ball slipped through his hands and Tom McConway was just unable to turn the ball into the net from a narrow angle. The half ended with Nick Beasant heading Mark Bell’s cross just over the bar.

Chippenham had shown little going forward, but four minutes after the restart a long wind-assisted clearance was not dealt with and Charlie Griffin stole in to lob over Shane Gore for the opening goal. Three minutes later Gore went to punch clear Ashan Holgate’s right-wing cross, but only succeeded in finding Griffin who hooked in the second goal. Chesham looked like a beaten side from then on, but their cause was not helped when Nick Beasant had to go off injured on the hour. Midway through the half Griffin set up Holgate for a shot which flew across the Chesham goal from the edge of the area. With the game over as a contest Chippenham came close late on when Holgate set up Jordan Roberts who shot over from the edge of the area, then in stoppage time Holgate turned in Luke Ballinger’s right-wing cross to seal the win for the visitors.
