Chesham's poor start to the league season continued with a second home defeat inside a week. At times this game was reminiscent of the debacle against Beaconsfield last season - Chesham scored an early goal against struggling opponents, eased off thinking the game was won, were caught by a sucker punch and steadily went downhill as the opposition took heart.
There were two changes from the team that lost to Rothwell, Dean Harding and Danny Burnell coming in for Matt Skinner and Richard Howard, against a Stourport side that finished bottom of this division last season and had lost their opening three games. Chesham took control from the start and after two minutes Phil Turner controlled Danny Burnell's through pass and lobbed over the keeper but just over the bar. However in the next minute Turner put Chesham ahead after the visitors' defence hesitated in dealing with a right-wing cross.
Chesham were cutting through the Stourport defence with ease at this stage and a cross from Carl Bruce caused a scramble in the box and Dean Harding tried to prod the ball in but got it stuck under his foot. Stourport broke away with a snap shot from Craig Marshall that forced a flying save from Andy Hall, then when Adam Robinson crossed back in Wesley Joyce side-footed wide from close range. However Chesham resumed control of the game and Carl Bruce had a shot kicked away from close to the line, then got his foot to Dave Fotheringham's angled cross but could only divert the ball across goal. Dean Harding looked to be bundled off the ball as he burst into the area, but Chesham looked so in control at this stage that it hardly seemed to matter. However shortly before half-time Chesham eased off and were punished for some slack defending. Stourport won a free kick midway inside the Chesham half and played the ball in to the unmarked Joyce, who was able to turn and fire into the roof of the net unchallenged.
In the early stages of the second half Chesham began to misplace their passes as Stourport began to come into the game. Kevin Cotton, who was injured after a bad tackle that earned Joyce a booking, was eventually forced to go off but the move paid dividends as sub Dom Marsala set up Chesham's second goal, winning the ball on the right and advancing to the box before firing in a shot that keeper Steve Parker could only parry and Phil Turner tucked away the rebound. However the lead was to last only three minutes as Stourport won another free kick, Scott Stamps lofted it into the area where the unmarked Craig Marshall hit a first-time shot into the net from a narrow angle, beating Hall at his near post.
By now Chesham had faded as an attacking force and the visitors looked the more likely winners. Eight minutes from time an angled shot from sub Richard Burgess crashed against a post, Burgess turned the rebound across goal and Marshall tapped it in but was ruled offside. However the reprieve lasted only a minute as Marshall burst through the middle of the Chesham defence and scored the winner with a shot from the edge of the box. Chesham had hardly had a noteworthy attack after Marshall's goal, but in desperation threw men forward to try to retrieve the game. Sam Ledger got his head to a Michael Toner corner and the ball struck a defender on the arm but the referee ruled it accidental, then in the last minute Dom Marsala's free kick was flicked on by Danny Burnell but Ledger and Carl Bruce were unable to force the ball past Parker.
