Chesham turned on the= style with their best performance of the season to date. Sutton Coldfield are a better side= than their league position suggests, but they finished well beaten after a classy second half display by Chesham. However the outcome could have been very different but for Richard H= ayward’s penalty save after 20 minutes.

Chesham made four cha= nges – Richard Hayward returned in goal although Michael Underwood was on = the bench as cover, Dave Fotheringham and Michael <= span class=3DSpellE>Bardle replaced Lewis Laws and Kevin Cotton, and Chri= s Bangura started in place of Darrell Cox who was away.= To counteract the visitors’ = two wide players John Kyriacou and Michael Bardle played as orthodox full-backs in a four-man de= fence with Mark Lambert pushed forward into midfield. Chesham suffered a setback i= n the first minute when Nick Leach pulled a muscle and had to go off a few minutes later. Chesham had the first notable attack when Danny Talbot’s long free kick was headed across g= oal by Sam Ledger to Leon Archer whose header was blocked by keeper Tony Breedon, then at the other end Sam Wilson’s thr= ow was flicked on by Craig Marshall and Nathan Lamey h= ooked goalwards but Richard Hayward produced a smart save t= o turn the ball over.

and three minutes later the course of the game was changed when Chesham ope=

his goal to block but only as far as Wales who fired into the corn=

the net from just outside the area.
Shortly afterwards Wales sent Chris Bangura
free and he lobbed the advancing keeper only for Philip Male to get back and
clear off the line, then at the other end Hayward had to tip over a rising
drive from Craig Marshall. Ch=
ris Bangura then ran on to Danny Talbot’s pass and
rounded Breedon but in doing so knocked the bal=
l wide
of the goal, but shortly afterwards was forced to go off after failing to s=
hake
off an early knock. However C=
hesham
kept on the attack and Steve Wales controlled a long ball from Mark Lambert=
and
shot from the edge of the area, and Breedon sli=
pped
as he moved to save and was relieved to see the ball go just wide.}

Early in the second h= alf sub Danny Burnell seized on a poor clearance by Breedon but could only shoot straight at the keeper, = but Chesham made it 2-0 on 52 minutes when Steve Wales sent Leon Archer clear to roll the ball past the advancing keeper.&n= bsp; Chesham were now in full cry and a snap shot from Michael Bardle rolled just past the far post, but shortly afterwards a neat move down the right saw John Kyriaco= u slip the ball into the path of Steve Wales who crossed for Dave Fotheringham to slot home the third from the edge of = the six-yard box. Dave Fotheringham was just beaten to the ball by Breedon as he went to meet Leon Archer’s throug= h ball as Chesham continued to pour forward. Kyriacou was now free of defensive dutie= s and he scored the fourth on 73 minutes with a low shot after a neat build-up involving Wales and Fotheringham. Sutton Coldfield were being blitze= d and the referee seemed to take pity on them when awarded a penalty for the slightest of nudges by Michael Bardle, the sort= of decision that is often given when it makes no difference to the result. This time Nathan Lamey took the kick only for Hayward= to save again, only for the referee to order a retake because of encroachment. Hayward nearly made it a hat-trick of p= enalty saves when he got a hand to the second kick but this time Lamey’s effort carried too much power. The goal took a little of the gloss= off the win as both sides then played out time.
