Chesham won comfortably through to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.  This was not a game that will linger long in the memory, but Chesham were always in control and did not need to go after more goals after being two up at half-time.

There were four changes to the starting line-up – Michael Underwood was given a start in goal as Richard Hayward has a niggling injury, Sam Ledger replaced Ollie Adedeji in defence, John Kyriacou came in for the departed Dave Hicks, and Darrell Cox returned in place of Chris Bangura.  Early on Chesham showed the ability to cut through the centre of the Chalfont defence at will, and in the fourth minute Steve Wales’s pass sent Darrell Cox clear to beat keeper Mark Oliver but the ball rolled wide of the post.  On the quarter-hour another Wales pass sent Leon Archer through but Oliver made a good save.  However Chesham’s defence did not look entirely solid and Michael Underwood had to make a smart reaction save after Terrell Lewis touched on a Ben Stack corner.  However in the 22nd minute Chesham took the lead when Kevin Cotton’s pass sent Cox clear again and this time he slid ball past the advancing keeper into the net.

Chesham continued on the attack and Oliver had to dive at the feet of Steve Wales and parry a powerful shot from Kevin Cotton.  At the other end Underwood had to produce a fine diving save from Terrell Lewis, but Chesham came back and Wales again put Archer through but Oliver saved his first effort and the follow-up was just wide.  Chesham then had a sticky period and Adam Louth lobbed over Underwood but also over the bar, then Louth headed over from Alan Hedley’s cross.  Chesham’s defence then misjudged a long clearance by Oliver and Curtis Woods stole in to lob over Underwood onto the roof of the net.  However in the last minute of the half a neat Chesham move ended with Wales releasing Leon Archer who rolled the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0.

In the second half Chalfont had more of the game as Chesham seemed content to sit on their lead.  Soon after the interval Kevin Cotton was forced off through injury, and sub Dave Fotheringham was called into action straightaway to head off the line as John Carroll got his head to a Stack corner.  However Chalfont never threatened again and Chesham could have added to their total, firstly when Sam Ledger got his head to Danny Talbot’s free kick but the ball was cleared, then Darrell Cox broke away down the right and squared the ball to Steve Wales, but the defence had got back and both Wales’s shot and Cox’s follow-up effort were blocked.  Late in the game sub Chris Bangura broke away and slipped the ball past Oliver but beyond the far post.
