Chesham put the past two league defeats firmly behind them with this excellent win. This was a committed and workmanlike performance and they fully deserved to inflict the first-ever defeat on the newly-formed Farnborough FC.
There were three changes from the starting line-up from the Stourport game and a change in formation, as Mark Lambert and Matt Skinner came in as right and left back respectively, and Michael Toner came in on the left side of midfield, replacing Sam Ledger, Danny Talbot and Dean Harding. Farnborough, who have a record of two wins and two draws in the South and West division, had the first moment of note when Ray Spence intercepted Matt Skinner's back pass and pushed the ball past the advancing Andy Hall but also wide of the goal. However the game was otherwise uneventful until Chesham took the lead on 14 minutes with a well-worked goal. Dave Fotheringham played the ball down the right channel for Kevin Cotton to run onto, and Cotton had time to look up and measure his cross which Fotheringham converted with a glancing header at the near post.
Shortly afterwards Farnborough's Mark Jones got his head to a free kick only for Carl Bruce to clear from near the goal-line, but Chesham were now in control of the game and were well worth the second goal on 34 minutes. A neat passing move set up Michael Toner who sent Phil Turner clear, Turner's shot beat the advancing keeper Lyall Beazley but crashed against the inside of the post, only for Turner to get to the loose ball first and cross for Danny Burnell to slam in from close range. Late in the half another free kick into the Chesham box ran loose and James Stokoe shot goalwards only for Andy Hall to fist clear, but Chesham came back and Matt Skinner nearly caught out Beazley at his near post with an angled shot when everyone was expecting a cross.
Farnborough used all their three substitutions by the start of second half and reshuffled their defence. However in the opening minute Chesham nearly made it three when Carl Bruce's free kick was headed out to Dave Fotheringham whose first-time shot took a slight deflection and flew just wide. Thereafter Farnborough began to enjoy more possession but lacked penetration and Andy Hall did not have to make a save in the second half. Chesham were content to sit on their lead and look for the occasional breakaway while the home side resorted to pumping the ball into the Chesham box to no avail. Shortly before the end Stokoe showed his frustration with an ugly forearm smash into Andy Keepence as he headed clear, thus becoming the fourth Farnborough player to go into the referee's notebook. Chesham eventually saw out time in some comfort and nearly added a third with a shot from sub Dom Marsala that Beazley saved at the second attempt.
