Martin Rice 1 Hafed Al-Droubi Chesham secured their first win in five games with a fine performance against a Tiverton side in the play-off places. Chesham made light of a pitch that was only just about playable, and were the better side for long periods and good value for the win.

Munashe Sundire was kept out by the injury sustained against Slough on New Year’s Day, and with Benji Crilley still sidelined Matt Bevans switched to right back with Danny Green dropping back and Oran Swales coming in. Shane Bush also came in for the injured Joe Iaciofano, so Chesham were only able to name three substitutes. The pitch passed a lengthy early-morning inspection, but was very heavy and was not suited to passing football. Nevertheless Chesham made a bright start with Jefferson Louis setting up Ravi Shamsi on the right, but home keeper Martin Rice came out to block Shamsi’s shot. Tiverton attempted to break through but two efforts from Levi Landricombe were mishit and both well off target. Just after the half-hour Callum Hall’s cross was headed goalwards by Jared Lewington but came off a defender and flew over the bar. However Chesham had another good spell shortly before half-time, and Shane Bush met an Adam Watkins corner at the near post but could only stab the ball wide. In the last minute of the half Danny Green’s right-wing cross came to Jhai Dhillon whose shot was blocked for a corner. Adam Watkins’ corner was cleared but the ball came back to him on the left, and Watkins found the net with a fine right-foot shot that dipped just under the bar to give Chesham the lead.

Early in the second half a great ball from Jefferson Louis sent Ravi Shamsi clear but his attempted chip was easily saved by the advancing Martin Rice. Two minutes later Tiverton’s Callum Hall broke forward and fired in a shot that Hafed Al-Droubi dived to his left to hold. The home side then had their best spell of the game and equalised shortly before the hour. Jamie Short fired the ball back into the Chesham area after a corner had been cleared, and the ball bounced around before eventually rolling over the line with Tom Bath claiming the final touch. However the home side were only level for four minutes, as Oran Swales headed across from beyond the far post on the right and Shane Bush nipped in to turn the ball past Rice. Five minutes later Danny Green set up Jefferson Louis who fired in a shot that beat Rice but smacked against the crossbar. Chesham continued to look the more likely to score but Darren Locke’s header saw Rice dive to save, then Jefferson Louis had a shot blocked at the expense of a corner. Late in the game a long free kick into the Chesham box was chested down and cleared by Darren Locke, then a first-time shot from Ollie Knowles flew well over the bar. However the home side failed to put the Chesham defence under sustained pressure, and in stoppage time Lewis Toomey seized on a long clearance from Hafed Al-Droubi and shot across the face of the home goal.
