Man Of The Match

Hafed Al-Droubi 1 Louis Connor Chesham’s thirteen-game unbeaten run came to an end with this defeat. Chesham never reached the heights of Saturday’s second-half performance against Gloucester, but seemed to have overcome the loss of an early goal only to concede again on the hour.

Jhai Dhillon was kept out by the injury sustained in Saturday’s game, so Zack Reynolds deputised at left back. New signing Ravi Shamsi came on as a second-half substitute after signing from Banbury the day before. Chesham made a slow start and fell behind in the sixth minute, when Eli Bako pulled the ball back from the by-line and Charlie Evans nipped in to score from close range. Seven minutes later David Hutton’s free kick came to Kieran Murphy at the far post but his header came back off the post. There was little to report in the next twenty minutes as Chesham struggled for fluency while Stratford were content to sit on their lead. Just after the half-hour Oran Swales set up Adam Watkins for a shot that was tipped over by keeper Louis Connor, and from the resulting corner the ball came to Oran Swales at the near post but he could only head wide. However on 37 minutes Kieran Murphy’s header from another Hutton corner was partially cleared, and Benji Crilley equalised with a shot from just inside the area. Two minutes later Joe Iaciofano and Oran Swales combined and the ball came to Shane Bush in the area but the visiting defence scrambled the ball away.

Chesham dominated the opening stages of the second half, their best moment coming when Zack Reynolds broke down the left and set up Joe Iaciofano whose shot just cleared the bar. The visitors had shown little in attack but on 62 minutes a left-wing move gave William Grocott the chance to shoot high into the net from outside the area. The goal knocked Chesham’s confidence and sub Michael Taylor broke clear, and rounded Hafed Al-Droubi but took the ball too far wide. On 70 minutes a Zack Reynolds free kick was headed across goal and past the near post by Shane Bush, then Oran Swales crossed to the far post but Ravi Shamsi could not get his head to the ball. Joe Iaciofano then set up Ravi Shamsi for a shot that Connor saved low to his right. Four minutes from time the ball dropped to the feet of Benji Crilley in the Stratford area but he mishit his shot and the ball was cleared. Stratford had showed little ambition after scoring, and Connor was belatedly booked for incessant time-wasting. However on 89 minutes Lee Thomas broke down the left and crossed, Darren Locke stuck out a foot but only succeeded in diverting the ball past Hafed Al-Droubi for the killer third goal. In stoppage time Ravi Shamsi’s free kick into the Stratford area was held by Connor who nearly carried the ball into his own net.
