Josh Tibbets 1 Harry Isted Chesham ended Royston’s run of nine consecutive home league wins with a determined performance. After the home side dominated the opening half-hour Chesham’s opening goal changed the course of the game, and after that Royston rarely if ever looked like getting back into the game.

There were three changes to the line-up from last Saturday’s league game: 20-year-old goalkeeper Harry Isted made his debut after signing from Luton the day before, Lewis Toomey replaced the injured Shane Bush, and Benji Crilley returned after missing six matches with Matt Bevans pushed into midfield and Ravi Shamsi dropping to the bench. The pitch was soft but playable and there is quite a substantial slope which Royston had in their favour in the first half. The home side took control of the game early on but created few chances, the best coming on 18 minutes when Scott Bridges set up Josh Castiglione whose shot beat the advancing Harry Isted but Kieran Murphy got back to clear. Three minutes later John Frendo shot first-time from Adam Marriott’s pass but the ball flew narrowly over the bar from the edge of the area. Just after the half-hour Chesham threatened for the first time when Oran Swales sliced a shot wide from Lewis Toomey’s crossfield pass. Two minutes later Chesham were awarded a free kick just outside the home penalty area, which Jefferson Louis took and the ball deflected off the defensive wall and into the net just inside the far post. Chesham grew in confidence and two minutes later Jhai Dhillon’s shot was tipped over by home keeper Josh Tibbets, then Matt Bevans crossed and Lewis Toomey attempted to force the ball home in a crowded penalty area but was denied by Tibbets. The half ended with Kieran Murphy blocking a long-range effort from Scott Thomas, and the ball came to Josh Castiglione but his shot was safely held by Harry Isted.

The home team never looked the same after the goal, and in the early minutes of the second half Tibbets got away with a loose clearance which hit Oran Swales and could have gone anywhere. Just after the hour mark Jhai Dhillon’s low cross was missed by Oran Swales at the near post, and the ball came to Danny Green who controlled and shot over. The home side brought on two new strikers, but they made little headway against a solid Chesham defence in which Harry Isted looked increasingly assured. Royston ‘s best chance of the half came on 70 minutes, when a long ball came to Adam Marriott who mishit the ball across goal from a dangerous position. Six minutes later Chesham broke away and Lewis Toomey was brought down by Adam Murray just inside the home penalty area, and Jefferson Louis confidently put away the resulting penalty to make it 2-0. Two minutes later Jhai Dhillon won possession from Adam Murray, and set up Lewis Toomey who blazed the ball over. Late in the game Lewis Toomey’s cross came off a defender to Adam Watkins who mishit a shot wide, but by then Chesham had done enough to secure the win.
