Kieran Drake 1 Niall Clayton Chesham reached the quarter-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup with this penalty shoot-out victory. After going behind early on Chesham fought their way back into the game, but it was largely a routine affair until a madcap last half-hour.

Chesham made five changes which meant debuts for right-back Gerardo Smaldone, plus 18-year-old goalkeeper Niall Clayton who has signed on a month’s loan from Oxford United. Smaldone replaced Darren Locke with Matt Bevans switching to the centre of defence. Maidenhead made eight changes from their last league game on Saturday. Chesham’s revamped defence looked all at sea early on, and Moses Emmanuel seized on a stray pass and seemed certain to score but Niall Clayton got back to block. Emmanuel then headed over and Ryan Upward shot wide before the home side took the lead in the ninth minute, Adrian Clifton shooting low into the corner of the net after Moses Emmanuel had pulled the ball back from wide on the left. Chesham began to settle and gradually took control of the game although chances were few. Shane Bush shot wide of the far post after good work by Ravi Shamsi on the right, Kieran Murphy headed over from Jhai Dhillon’s corner. Just after half-hour Shamsi again found Shane Bush whose first effort was blocked and the follow-up bounced away off the body of keeper Kieran Drake. At the other end Adrian Clifton hit a powerful shot high and wide, but the half ended with Jon-Jo Bates setting up Shane Bush whose shot was deflected behind but the referee gave a goal kick.

The game suddenly sprang to life on the hour mark when Chesham scored a spectacular equaliser. Ravi Shamsi ran down the right, cut inside and shot left-footed into the far corner of the net beating Drake all ends up. Three minutes later Nana Owusu restored Maidenhead’s lead with a shot low past Niall Clayton’s left hand, but two minutes later Chesham were level again. Ravi Shamsi’s shot from a free kick hit the defensive wall and bounced up, Kieran Drake palmed it away from under the bar but Lewis Toomey got to the loose ball first and scored from close range. Shortly afterwards James Mulley shot across the face of the Chesham goal after Adrian Clifton had won the ball, then at the other end Shane Bush headed over from Jhai Dhillon’s free kick. Niall Clayton’s debut ended early when he was sent off fifteen minutes from time, after bringing down Nana Owusu who was clean through on the edge of the area. Hafed Al-Droubi came on but was unable to stop Owusu’s free kick which went through the wall and into the bottom corner of the net. However Chesham equalised for a third time three minutes later, when Jhai Dhillon’s shot was blocked and Jefferson Louis drove the loose ball into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. Chesham came closer to winning it late on, Drake diving to his right to keep out a long-range effort from Ravi Shamsi, then Shamsi sent Oran Swales clear but Drake saved his first effort and the follow-up was deflected away for a corner. Maidenhead had one last chance when Nathan Minhas exchanged passes with Adrian Clifton, but Hafed al-Droubi blocked the resulting shot. In stoppage time Jefferson Louis’ lay-off sent Jon-Jo Bates clear to go round Drake, only to shoot wide. Chesham converted all their five penalties in the resulting shoot-out, so Hafed Al-Droubi’s save from Nana Owusu’s kick proved decisive.
