Hafed Al-Droubi 1 Colm McAdden Chesham kept up their recent good form with this win over a Basingstoke side that could have gone above them in the table with a win. Chesham carried much the grater goal threat in a fine first-half performance, and snuffed out any hope of a Basingstoke fightback midway through the second half.

After the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup game in midweek Chesham reverted to the same starting eleven that played last Saturday at Tiverton. Chesham started brightly and forced a corner in the first minute when Jefferson Louis’ cross was just cleared away from Shane Bush. Basingstoke then had more of the ball and George Bennett fired a long-range effort just over, then Tim Wohlfiel crossed to Sam Smart but his first-time effort lacked power and Hafed Al-Droubi was able to watch the ball roll wide. On 20 minutes a neat pass from Jhai Dhillon found Ravi Shamsi, who lobbed over keeper Colm McAdden but also over the bar. However three minutes later Dhillon again found Shamsi in the area, and the ball came to Jefferson Louis whose lay-off enabled Oran Swales to shoot into the roof of the net for Chesham’s opener. Basingstoke’s threat came mainly from set pieces and one George Bennett corner flew across the Chesham goal with no-one getting a touch. However Chesham were playing the neater football and just after the half-hour mark Jefferson Louis turned his man on the left, crossed from the by-line and Shane Bush just got enough contact on the ball to steer it over the line. Basingstoke’s best moment of the half came from another Bennett corner, which Callum Bunting headed onto the bar via a Chesham defender, and Sam Argent’s follow-up also came back off the woodwork. However on 39 minutes Chesham scored the third via a corner of their own, Kieran Murphy heading in after Shane Bush and Matt Bevans had both seen shots blocked.

With a three-goal lead Chesham eased off in the early stages of the second half and the visitors had more of the ball. Shortly before the hour mark George Bennett’s free kick forced Hafed Al-Droubi into a hurried save and the ball was eventually scrambled away. Two minutes later Bennett found some space on the left and fired in a shot that came back into play off the near post. However midway through the half Basingstoke were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Chesham area, Bennett’s kick was saved at a stretch by Hafed Al-Droubi but Callum Bunting headed home the loose ball to cut the deficit. However Chesham restored their three-goal advantage just four minutes later, when Jefferson Louis won the ball and fed Shane Bush who held off a defender and shot through the legs of McAdden and into the net. Basingstoke never threatened again and Chesham were content to play out time, although they could have had a fifth late on when a Lewis Toomey pass split the defence but Jefferson Louis’ shot bounced away off the legs of the keeper.
