Hafed Al-Droubi 1 Jack Harding Chesham were brought swiftly back to earth after Saturday’s win, as they were comfortably second best to a slick-passing Banbury side.

With Victor Osobu away Ty Ward made his first senior appearance on the left wing, and the only other change saw Matt Bevans replace Danny Green in midfield. Banbury had the first effort on goal, Ravi Shamsi firing over the bar from 30 yards in the fifth minute. Chesham had as much of the ball early on, and in the thirteenth minute a neat move down the left ended with Lewis Toomey having a shot blocked. However in the next minute Tom Winters got away down the visitors’ left and fired in a shot that was parried by Hafed Al-Droubi. Banbury dominated the rest of the half and a crossfield ball from Ravi Shamsi found Winters whose shot was turned behind by Al-Droubi. After a corner was cleared Conor McDonagh crossed back into the Chesham area, but Ricky Johnson could only head over from close range. McDonagh then broke free down the visitors’ left, but Kieran Murphy got in a challenge just as McDonagh was about to take on Al-Droubi who was able to save. On 34 minutes Banbury broke through when McDonagh crossed from the right, Zack Reynolds attempted to clear but headed the ball into the path of Tom Winters who controlled and shot into the net low to Al-Droubi’s right. Chesham came close once before half-time, when Jhai Dhillon curled a free kick into the Banbury area to Shane Bush whose glancing header just cleared the bar.

In the early stages of the second half Chesham began to establish a foothold in the game, but on 58 minutes Banbury broke and Ravi Shamsi set up Jefferson Louis for a shot that Al-Droubi saved with his legs. The resulting corner was cleared back to Tom Winters whose cross was headed out, but only as far as Conor McDonagh who shot low into the corner of the net for Banbury’s second. Two minutes later Chesham halved the deficit when Banbury’s defence failed to deal with Oran Swales’ left-wing corner, and the ball was forced over the line with Shane Bush getting the final touch. Shortly afterwards Jon-Jo Bates fired in a long-range effort that flew just wide, but Banbury came back with Ravi Shamsi cutting in from the right and firing in a shot that Hafed Al-Droubi was equal to. Chesham brought on an extra striker in Alex Cathline but rarely threatened to get back in the game. In the closing moments Hafed Al-Droubi produced another smart save to deny Leam Howards, then in the last minute of normal time Jefferson Louis broke free and slotted the ball past the advancing Al-Droubi to seal the win. There was just enough time left for Callum Bunting to glance a header wide from a Zack Reynolds cross.
