Richard Hayward 1 Shaun Rowley Chesham ended their run of six defeats with this draw against a Slough side whose point was enough to secure a play-off place.

Chesham’s team was unchanged from last Friday’s loss at Weymouth. The game got off to a dramatic start as Dave Pearce’s long-range effort caught keeper Shaun Rowley off his line and dipped into the net with barely a minute gone. Chesham could have gone further ahead three minutes later, when Toby Little’s cross was headed out and Sam Youngs fired in a shot that was beaten away by Rowley. In the ninth minute Slough threatened for the first time when Simon Dunn ran at the Chesham defence but shot weakly and Richard Hayward saved comfortably. However in the next minute Gavin James broke down the visitors’ right and crossed for Liam Enver-Marum to head the equaliser. The next few minutes saw little action at either end, but Chesham’s hopes were hit when Benji Crilley was forced to go off with an ankle injury, so Brett Longden switched to the right and Toby Little dropped back to left-back. Despite the makeshift nature of Chesham’s defence the visitors created little, and were soon reduced to shouting optimistically for a penalty whenever the ball came into the Chesham area. In the last minute of the half James Dobson fired in a shot from the edge of the area that Richard Hayward was able to tip over the bar.

Early in the second half Simon Dunn shot over the bar after a Dobson corner was headed out, but Chesham were starting to come more into the game even though the visitors needed the points more. Just after the hour mark Liam Enver-Marum appeared to foul Brett Longden to win the ball and cross to Gavin James who slid in but lifted the ball over the bar. In the final half-hour Slough only came close once, when a Dobson free kick into the Chesham area was missed by Gavin James and came to Guy Hollis whose effort clipped the top of the bar. Towards the end of the game Chesham had one moment of danger, when a fine cross from Toby Little just eluded Ryan Blake in the middle, but with results elsewhere going Slough’s way both sides seemed content to play out time.
