Man Of The Match

Ashlee Jones 1 Oshane Brown Chesham finally made it past their Step 5 opponents at the second time of asking. Sevenoaks again made it hard with another battling display, but once Drew Roberts had restored Chesham’s lead in the second half there was only going to be one winner.

With Darren Purse returning after missing Saturday’s match through suspension, Chesham played with three central defenders which allowed Brett Longden and Toby Little to push forward down the wings. Bruce Wilson dropped to the bench with Stephan Hamilton-Forbes preferred to Matt Taylor and Barry Hayles and Drew Roberts replacing Ryan Blake and Brad Wadkins up front. Chesham enjoyed some success early on, with Toby Little setting up Drew Roberts for a shot that was just off target. However the visitors came back with Jerson Dos Santos attempting to set up Byron Walker in the penalty area, but Mat Mitchel-King got in a challenge and Ashlee Jones dived on the loose ball. Chesham took the lead after 21 minutes with a well-worked goal, when some neat build-up saw the ball switched across field to the left touchline and Toby Little pulled the ball back for Dave Pearce to lash into the roof of the net at the near post. Shortly afterwards Toby Little was forced to limp off with an ankle injury which needed a trip to hospital for a scan. Both sides had chances late on in the half, Jerson Dos Santos taking a 30-yard free kick which flew wide of the near post and Drew Roberts trying a shot which keeper Oshane Brown tipped over. Chesham looked set to see out the rest of the first half but in the third minute of stoppage time Drew Roberts clipped Jimmy Rogers as Rogers attempted to get to the by-line on the left, and Jerson Dos Santos tucked away the resulting penalty.

Five minutes after the restart Barry Hayles’ through ball saw Drew Roberts break away down the left, cut inside and shoot into the net at the near post to restore Chesham’s lead. Sevenoaks came back with two speculative efforts, one by Kieron McCann and one from Harrison Carnegie but both were off target. The last half-hour saw Chesham more likely to add to their lead as the visitors tired. Drew Roberts fired in a low shot that Dave Pearce attempted to flick past Brown but the keeper parried and eventually held on to the ball. From a Dave Pearce corner Mat Mitchel-King chested the ball down and shot but the ball hit a defender and went behind. Sam Youngs took the resulting corner and Adam Martin appeared to be wrestled to the ground in the area but nothing was given. Fifteen minutes from time Benji Crilley’s cross was headed over by Sam Youngs, then late in the game Drew Roberts’ shot was tipped round the post by Brown. In stoppage time Drew Roberts was forced to go off for treatment after a poor challenge from Jack Miles, but the game ended with Chesham still on the attack but Dave Pearce’s shot was held by Brown.
