Ashlee Jones 1 Ravan Constable Chesham made it to the First Round Proper for the second season running, thanks to this narrow victory over Potters Bar Town. This was far from a classic but Chesham were always in control of the game after Drew Roberts’ early penalty, apart from a brief spell at the end following the dismissal of Adam Martin.

Chesham were unchanged from last Saturday’s league draw against Merthyr Town. Neither side established any early control of the game, although Barry Hayles brought down a cross from Benji Crilley at the near post but keeper Ravan Constable was able to grab the ball. In the fourteenth minute Crilley broke away down the right and advanced on the penalty area when he was brought down by a late challenge from Ashley Nathaniel-George. It was a clear penalty and Drew Roberts converted to give Chesham the lead. Soon afterwards the visitors’ Michael Murray shot powerfully but straight at Ashlee Jones. However Chesham came closer to scoring when Constable came out of his goal to clear but was beaten by Drew Roberts, and the ball came to Ryan Blake who shot towards a gaping net but Garry Jones got back to clear off the line. Chris Doyle’s snap shot flew over the Chesham bar which was all the visitors could muster in the first half.

The early stages of the second half followed much the same pattern with neither side looking like scoring. On 66 minutes Drew Roberts found sub Brad Wadkins in space on the left, but Wadkins’ shot flew high and wide of the far post. As the game began to open up Ryan Forde’s shot on the turn was held by Ashlee Jones, then a low cross from Brad Wadkins was nearly turned into his own net by Sean Grace. However the game was thrown back in the balance eight minutes from time when Adam Martin, who had been booked for dissent in the first half, was shown a second yellow for a foul on Ashley Nathaniel-George. Potters Bar threw defender Carl McCluskey up front and the move had an immediate effect, McCluskey getting to the by-line and pulling the ball back for Danny Hart whose effort rolled harmlessly past the far post. Shortly afterwards a Will Wambeek corner was cleared as far as the edge of the Chesham area and Danny Hart shot over the bar. That was the visitors’ last chance and two minutes later Stephan Hamilton-Forbes found Matt Taylor whose shot beat Constable but came back off the post, and Brad Wadkins’ follow-up effort was deflected away for a corner. As tempers frayed Will Wambeek flew into a wild challenge in stoppage time and was shown a straight red card.
