Luke McGee 1 Ashlee Jones Chesham went out of the FA Cup with a battling performance against League One Peterborough. Chesham had more of the game in the first half but went in a goal down thanks to a single mistake and a moment of quality from the home team’s Shaquile Coulthirst. That changed the game and Chesham battled hard without reward until Ryan Blake’s goal revived hopes of an upset.

Adam Martin returned in midfield after sitting out last week’s FA Trophy win at Leatherhead, while Drew Roberts again swapped places with Ryan Blake who was on the bench. Chesham nearly scored in the opening twenty seconds when Bruce Wilson nipped between Ricardo Santos and Luke McGee but the home keeper blocked. Roared on by an enthusiastic crowd Chesham had the upper hand, and on five minutes Sam Youngs shot just wide. Midway through the half a mistake by Ryan Tafazolli let in Brad Wadkins who shot straight at McGee. After half an hour Peterborough had their first effort on goal, a long shot from Michael Bostwick that flew harmlessly over the bar. The home side were struggling and their supporters becoming increasingly frustrated, but on 40 minutes Marcus Maddison broke forward and set up Shaquile Coulthirst whose shot found the top corner of the net giving Ashlee Jones no chance. Two minutes later Santos got his head to a Maddison free kick but Benji Crilley cleared off the line. However Chesham came back and in stoppage time Tafazolli intercepted a crossfield pass from Bruce Wilson, but nearly made a present of the ball to the incoming Dave Pearce.

Early in the second half Ashlee Jones stretched to tip over a Marcus Maddison free kick, then Maddison chipped over the bar from a good position. Shortly after the hour mark Shaquile Coulthirst was in the clear but took too long and Mat Mitchel-King made a desperate last-ditch tackle. Chesham were struggling to contain the home forwards and Maddison side-footed wide from Tom Nichols’ pass, then Nichols squared the ball to Michael Smith who side-footed wide from eight yards with only Ashlee Jones to beat. Midway through the half Darren Purse was off the field receiving treatment and Peterborough took immediate advantage, Michael Smith crossing low for Coulthirst to slide in his second goal of the afternoon. Ashlee Jones then produced an exceptional save to touch Gwion Edwards’ shot onto the bar, then Coulthirst had a chance to complete a hat-trick but Jones saved well. Chesham came back into the game but made little headway apart from an angled drive from Sam Youngs that flew well over. However ten minutes from time Michael Bostwick attempted a back-pass that Ryan Blake intercepted and tapped into an empty net to give Chesham hope. Ashlee Jones made another good save, tipping over a shot from Andrew Hughes, then Chesham had their best chance when Benji Crilley got his head to a Dave Pearce corner but could only nod the ball over the bar. Late in the game Coulthirst curled a shot past the post, then a free kick from Paul Taylor was tipped round the post by Ashlee Jones. However the home side were grateful to hold on to their narrow lead and bring an end to Chesham’s gallant Cup run.
