Merthyr Town
Chesham United
Man Of The Match
Benji Crilley
Oliver Davies 1 Ashlee Jones Chesham lost ground on the leading teams after suffering a second defeat in five days against the division’s top two. This was a tight game with little between the two teams until the game was effectively decided in a two-minute spell midway through the second half.

Matt Taylor, David Hutton and Dave Pearce all returned to the starting eleven, replacing Barry Hayles, Drew Roberts and Stephan Hamilton-Forbes who were all on the bench. Darren Purse was named as a substitute but only as cover as he continues his comeback from injury. After five minutes Scott Barrow swung a free kick into the Chesham area but Kayne McLaggon’s header was well saved by Ashlee Jones, then shortly afterwards another Barrow free kick was headed wide by McLaggon. Home keeper Oliver Davies looked uncertain in the air throughout the game, and on 14 minutes Davies flapped at a David Hutton corner but the ball bounced off Benji Crilley and wide of the far post. In the next minute Curtis McDonald was disposed by Sam Youngs who broke into the home area only to be brought down by a despairing lunge from Ashley Evans. However Oliver Davies went the right way to push away Dave Pearce’s penalty. Five minutes later Davies dived to his right to keep out Sam Youngs’ shot, after which the game went into a quiet phase. Towards half-time there were chances at both ends, firstly when Curtis McDonald again gave the ball away but both David Hutton and Dave Pearce were denied. At the other end Ryan Prosser ran to the edge of the area and the ball ran to Kayne McLaggon who shot well wide, then Ian Traylor found Prosser in the box but Benji Crilley got back to head away the resulting shot. In the last minute of the half Oliver Davies dropped another David Hutton corner, resulting in a goalmouth scramble before the ball was hurriedly cleared.

Early in the second half Kyle Copp and Ian Traylor were both off target with long-rang efforts, then Chesham went up to the other end with a neat move that ended when Davies tipped Matt Taylor’s effort round the post. Dave Pearce took the resulting corner which Davies missed completely but Scott Barrow headed off the line from Benji Crilley. In an open game Ashlee Jones came out to deny Ashley Evans, but at the other end David Hutton shot wide after a Dave Pearce corner was headed wide, and Sam Youngs headed just over from a Hutton cross from the left wing. Midway through the half Merthyr made a double substitution which paid off immediately, as Toby Little lost his footing and Jarrad Wright broke forward to score with a low drive from the edge of the area. In the next minute Adam Martin brought down Kayne McLaggon, and the referee was immediately surrounded by Merthyr players demanding a second yellow card which he duly produced. Chesham never looked like getting back into the game after that, and failed to score for the first time in sixteen games. The home team were content to waste time in the corners well before the end of normal time, but deep into stoppage time they broke away and Benji Crilley got back to deny Corey Jenkins.
