Ashlee Jones 1 Liam Gooch After four weeks and seven consecutive away games, Chesham were glad to get back home and it showed in a return to form. Hitchin were unbeaten in the league since August, but rarely looked like getting anything out of the game after Sam Youngs headed Chesham in front midway through the first half.

Toby Little and Stephan Hamilton-Forbes were ruled out by the injuries sustained at Dorchester on Saturday, but Ashlee Jones was fit to start in goal. Adam Martin returned after a one-match suspension and Ryan Blake started with Bruce Wilson reverting to left back in Little’s absence. Chesham went on the attack from the kick-off, with a left-wing move that ended with Sam Youngs shooting over from just outside the area. Hitchin began to get into the game and in the twelfth minute a Robbie Burns shot wrong-footed Ashlee Jones, but the keeper recovered to grab the ball at the second attempt. Just when the visitors were looking the more dangerous Chesham took the lead, when Dave Pearce got to the by-line on the left and crossed for Sam Youngs to score with a far-post header that keeper Liam Gooch got a hand to but was unable to keep out. Shortly afterwards Chesham lost Mat Mitchel-King to injury to be replaced by Taylor McKenzie, but Hitchin had lost their composure and most of the rest of the half was taken up by niggly fouls and petty squabbles. In the fourth minute of stoppage time Ben Walster’s long-range free kick took a slight deflection but Ashlee Jones dived to his left to save.

Four minutes after the restart Chesham broke down the left, Bruce Wilson went on the overlap and crossed to Ryan Blake whose header hit the bar and bounced down over the line according to the linesman. Two minutes later Chesham broke again and Dave Pearce crossed towards Barry Hayles, the ball came to Drew Roberts who chipped over the advancing Gooch but Ben Walster got back to clear. Hitchin came back with Dan Webb heading wide from Kane Smith’s free kick, then Lewis Rolfe pumped another free kick into the Chesham area but Will Wright could only head over the bar. Chesham were largely content to sit on their lead but on 76 minutes Michal Gorniak won the ball in the Hitchin half, the ball came through to Drew Roberts who shot past Liam Gooch but also wide of the post. Hitchin continued to push forward but with little penetration, Liam Brooks working a shooting chance only to fire straight at Ashlee Jones and Will Wright glancing a header goalwards from another Rolfe free kick but again Jones saved comfortably.
