Glyn Garner 1 Ashlee Jones In the end this game went with the form-book as a late goal gave Chesham victory over struggling Cirencester. However this was a real battle in which the home team, boosted by two recent signings, gave Chesham a hard time before Brad Wadkins’ late winner.

With Brett Longden and Dave Pearce ruled out by injuries sustained in last week’s win over Dunstable, Toby Little and Sam Youngs kept their places in the team. Chesham made the quicker start but the home team went close in the fourth minute, when Tony Lee crossed from the by-line to Aidan Bennett whose close-range header came back off the bar. The home team then enjoyed a good spell but their goal on 17 minutes had the Chesham players and bench fuming. Tony Lee looked to be well offside when he collected a long ball forward, but was allowed to advance into the area before being brought down by Ashlee Jones for a penalty which Alan Griffin converted. Chesham moved up a gear and Matt Taylor fired a cross into the home area which Barry Hayles just failed to convert at the far post. After 24 minutes a neat move down the left saw Ryan Blake set up Toby Little who ran forward and equalised with a right-footed effort into the far corner. The remainder of the half was fairly quiet, although Adam Connolly broke through two challenges down the home left only to shoot wide. Towards half-time James Mortimer-Jones got into a dangerous position only to slice a shot well wide, then at the other end Barry Hayles headed wide from a Sam Youngs corner.

Neither side took control of the game in the second half, although Chesham looked the more likely to score. Ryan Blake’s angled drive produced a diving save from keeper Glyn Garner and Barry Hayles’ follow-up was blocked at the expense of a corner, which Sam Youngs took and Darren Purse’s header was saved by Garner. The home team’s more direct style of play occasionally stretched the Chesham defence but resulted in few attempts on goal, their best effort being a snap shot on the turn from Alan Griffin that was well dealt with by Ashlee Jones. Late in the game Toby Little’s free kick into the area was headed on by Brad Wadkins and Drew Roberts’ shot was tipped over at full stretch by Garner. However in the third minute of stoppage time Chesham broke away down the left, Ryan Blake crossed and Brad Wadkins slid in to knock the ball onto the crossbar and down, the linesman deciding that the ball had just crossed the line.
