Darren Chitty 1 Ashlee Jones Chesham’s run of midweek fixtures began with a defeat away to the league leaders. Ultimately Chippenham ran out comfortable winners but there was an element of good fortune about both their first-half goals.

Mat Mitchel-King was ruled out by the injury sustained on Saturday, but Curtis Ujah had recovered from illness to take his place. Adam Martin returned after suspension in place of Matt Taylor who was missing due to work commitments, while Stephan Hamilton-Forbes came in for David Hutton who was on the bench. Chesham started brightly with two early efforts from Stephan Hamilton-Forbes, both of which curled just high and wide. Chippenham showed little in the early stages but took the lead in the nineteenth minute. Nuno Felix came forward from left-back and fired the ball across goal, Andy Sandell stuck out a foot and the ball could have gone anywhere but nestled in to far corner of the net just inside the post. The home side relaxed and dominated the rest of the half, often playing the ball across the Chesham area but without creating any clear-cut chances. However shortly before half-time David Pratt broke down the home right towards the by-line and was challenged by Benji Crilley and the ball ended up in the hands of Ashlee Jones. The referee was well up with play and gave nothing but the linesman flagged for a penalty which Sandell converted. The home Youtube channel shows the penalty being taken but not the incident leading up to it, but as the home team celebrated a home fan can clearly be heard shouting ‘that was never a penalty’. Chesham never looked likely to get back in the game after that, although in stoppage time Drew Roberts had a hurried shot from the edge of the area straight at home keeper Darren Chitty.

Early in the second half a mishit clearance by Darren Chitty came to Ryan Blake 30 yards out, but Chitty got back to save the resulting shot. Ten minutes after the restart Brett Longden was booked for bringing down Pratt on the edge of the area, and James Guthrie set up Matt Smith who drilled a 30-yard shot low into the net to make it 3-0. The home team eased off after that, although Alex Ferguson shot well wide from a dangerous position. Chesham pulled one goal back on 72 minutes when Sam Youngs took a corner short, David Hutton crossed low into the area and Curtis Ujah side-footed the ball into the net from close range. However that was never likely to be anything more than a consolation as both sides played out time. Matt Smith wasted a reasonable chance by slicing a shot well off target late on, but Chippenham were otherwise content to waste time in the corners until the final whistle.
