Man Of The Match

Ashlee Jones 1 Enol Ordonez Chesham moved up to sixth in the table with this comfortable win over struggling Cambridge.

With Brett Longden joining Toby Little on the injured list, Chesham reshuffled with Sam Youngs dropping back to right-back and Benji Crilley on the left. Ryan Blake partnered Drew Roberts in attack with Brad Wadkins just behind the front two, while Bruce Wilson was recalled in midfield, Barry Hayles and Adam Martin dropping to the bench. Chesham were caught cold when the visitors took the lead after 85 seconds, Dean Mason pulling the ball back from the right for the unmarked Cemal Ramadan to fire into the far corner of the net. However the lead was to last only five minutes, as Benji Crilley’s left-wing throw came through to Ryan Blake who shot past keeper Enol Ordonez into the far corner. With both defences looking vulnerable Ramadan attempted to catch out Ashlee Jones with an attempted lob from 45 yards but Jones got back to save, then at the other end Drew Roberts crossed to Brad Wadkins whose effort was blocked as far as Dave Pearce who shot over. Ramadan’s free kick from the edge of the Chesham area was well anticipated by Jones who dived to his left to hold the ball, then Sam Youngs took a corner short and crossed to Ryan Blake who headed just over. Two minutes later Chesham took the lead when Dave Pearce and Benji Crilley combined down the left, and Crilley’s pull-back was controlled by Pearce who laid the ball off for Brad Wadkins to fire into the roof of the net. Cambridge faded as an attacking force and Chesham could have had a third when Ryan Blake fed Sam Youngs who fired the ball across goal, and Drew Roberts looked sure to score at the far post but his effort was blocked by Ordonez. The visitors’ hopes were further damaged on 38 minutes, when Dean Mason floored Benji Crilley with a wild challenge and was immediately shown a straight red card.

With a goal advantage against ten men Chesham controlled the second half. Ten minutes after the restart Dave Pearce’s shot was blocked by David Femiola and Pearce’s follow-up was parried by Ordonez. Midway through the half Ryan Blake drilled the ball across goal, just too far ahead of the incoming Drew Roberts who was offside anyway. Dave Pearce then got behind the Cambridge defence on the left and fired across goal, just behind the onrushing Ryan Blake. On 81 minutes Ryan Blake and Dave Pearce combined to set up Drew Roberts, who shot high and wide from a good position. Shortly afterwards Cambridge came close for the only time in the half, when sub Manuel Ramirez shot low to Ashlee Jones’ right but the ball rolled a yard wide of the post. Two minutes from the end of normal time Chesham sealed the points when Matt Taylor’s throw was not dealt with by the visiting defence, and Dave Pearce drove the ball into the roof of the net from ten yards.
