Jack Harding 1 Richard Hayward Chesham’s play-off hopes are now all but over after a run of three away matches that have yielded only two points. After an even first half Banbury took control of the game after the interval, as Chesham began to show the effect of the recent heavy fixture schedule.

Darren Purse returned after serving a two-match suspension, in a straight swap for Mat Mitchel-King. The only other change saw Matt Taylor returning in midfield, replacing the injured Brett Longden which meant that Chesham started with a three-man back line. Chesham had the first chance of the game in the second minute, when a left-wing move led to Ryan Blake having a shot blocked and Dave Pearce’s follow-up was just wide. Most of the rest of the first half was fairly even, although Banbury came close on two occasions. On 16 minutes a Tom Winters corner was not cleared and Ricky Johnson hurriedly hooked the ball over the bar from close range, then five minutes later Johnson seized on a loose pass and fed Zac McEachran but Richard Hayward came out from his goal to block. Towards half-time a long throw was cleared as far as Dave Pearce on the edge of the area, Pearce’s shot took a deflection but Jack Harding got down to save low to his left and the ball was scrambled away. From the resulting corner the ball was headed out to Drew Roberts beyond the far post, but his shot flew well wide.

Early in the second half Banbury’s Tom Bradbury ran to the by-line and pulled the ball back to Ricky Johnson who headed over the bar. Chesham came back with Darren Purse heading over from a Sam Youngs corner, but the home team were now in control of the game and Adam Martin was dropping back to help out in the centre of defence. Just before the hour mark Tom Winters crossed from the left beyond the far post, Conor McDonagh attempted to head in from a narrow angle but the ball came back off the post. Five minutes later Zac McEachran ran at the Chesham defence, Toby Little slipped and McEachran fired in a shot that Richard Hayward tipped over. Jack Westbrook headed over from a Tom Winters corner, but Chesham seemed to have weathered the storm when Banbury scored the only goal of the game on 68 minutes. Callum White went on a run into the Chesham area, cut inside and fired in a shot that just had enough power to squeeze under the body of the advancing Richard Hayward. Chesham attempted an immediate reply when Phil Roberts set up Benji Crilley for a shot that flew just high and wide from 25 yards. However Chesham rarely looked like getting back into the game after that, their cause not being helped by a shortage of fit substitutes. Banbury could have wrapped up the game when a Tom Winters cross was helped across goal by Ricky Johnson, and the ball was cleared to Jack Self but he blazed over from fifteen yards. Winters then fired a shot across goal and beyond the far post. Chesham brought on Alex Ward for his league debut late on, but Banbury sub Manny Duku missed two glorious chances, firstly shooting wide from McEachran’s pull-back then breaking clear only to shoot straight at the advancing Richard Hayward. Deep into stoppage time Chesham managed one last attack through Dave Pearce, but his shot was blocked and Matt Taylor could only hit the loose ball over the bar.
