Match Report By Simon Newbury
Man Of The Match
|Ben John||1||Shane Gore||After beating leaders Poole in their last league game 25 days ago, Chesham became the first team to lose to Paulton in the league. Chesham had enough chances, particularly in the first half, to have won the game comfortably but looked a beaten team after the surprise dismissal of Kelvin Bossman and a second goal for the home side on the hour.
Curtis Ujah was left out as he was one yellow card away from a suspension which would cause him to miss the Bradford game, while Ryan Blake was only on the bench for the same reason. George Casey came in on the right side of defence, while Dave Pearce replaced Sam Youngs in the starting line-up. Chesham stated well and had the game’s first real chance after 17 minutes, when Kelvin Bossman’s lay-off set up Dave Pearce for a shot which flew over. Paulton had one moment of danger when Leon Jeanne’s snap shot saw Shane Gore stretch to his left to turn the ball away. However two minutes later Chesham were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Toby Little’s shot beat keeper Ben John but came back off the post. However it was the home side who broke through on the half-hour, when Solomon Wheatley crossed from the right and Josh Morgan-Williams scored at the second attempt from close range. Chesham upped the tempo and Bruce Wilson played the ball back into the home area after a corner was cleared, but Brad Wadkins’ shot was parried by John. A neat move down the left enabled Kelvin Bossman to cross, Adam Martin headed the ball up in the air and Toby Little headed the loose ball past John but just past the post. However the best chance of the half came when Brad Wadkins broke clear as the home defenders waited for an offside flag that was never going to come, but Wadkins could only shoot off-balance after rounding John and the ball went high and wide.
The early stages of the second half passed fairly quietly until the 56th minute. The ball was out of play when the referee suddenly turned round and showed a straight red card to Kelvin Bossman, apparently for something he had said although the Chesham players seemed mystified. However two minutes later Brad Wadkins blocked a clearance from Craig Allen, ran on and set up Dave Pearce whose shot was saved by John. Paulton came back with Shane Gore saving from Leon Jeanne, while follow-up efforts from Wheatley and Jeanne were blocked. On the hour mark Josh Morgan-Williams sent Jordan Ricketts clear to slot the ball past Shane Gore to make it 2-0. Shortly afterwards Leon Jeanne’s free kick was turned round the post by Shane Gore. Chesham looked a beaten side and the game became notable for a lack of incident until the last few minutes. Jeanne shot over the bar after Morgan-Williams pulled the ball back from the by-line, while Chesham had one more chance late on when sub Ryan Blake rounded John but shot past the far post with Toby Little sliding in but just failing to get a touch.
