Tony Breeden 1 George Legg Chesham started off their league campaign with an encouraging performance but left with nothing to show for it. Chesham had by far the majority of the possession, and Leamington’s Tony Breeden was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers, but the home team took the lead against the run of play and that was enough to take the points.

Only four of Chesham’s starting eleven played for the club last season, but three others returned after spells away and Laurie Stewart made his comeback after fourteen months out with injury. On a warm afternoon the pattern of the game was set early on, with Chesham having most of the possession but with little action in either penalty area. Midway through the half Breeden dived to his left to save a shot from Ryan Blake, then Bruce Wilson curled the ball towards the far post but Brad Wadkins could only glance a header wide. On 28 minutes Leamington’s Ben Mackey cut in from the left and shot across George Legg into the far corner of the net for the game’s only goal. Chesham continued to press, and Matt Taylor’s left-wing corner found Sam Youngs at the far post but his header was blocked and the ball scrambled away.

Early in the second half Dave Pearce crossed from the right and Sam Youngs turned the ball goalwards but Breeden dropped on the ball at the far post. At the other end George Legg was called into action to turn Jack Edwards’ header round the post, but Chesham still had the upper hand. Just after the hour mark Sam Youngs crossed from the right onto the head of Matt Taylor, but Breeden reacted sharply to parry the ball. Brad Wadkins then pulled the ball back from the left and Dave Pearce’s near-post flick was turned behind by Breeden. Chesham brought on Barry Hayles for his first competitive appearance for the club, but the home defence kept him out and Chesham rarely threatened in the later stages. Late in the game Leamington sub Michael Williams cut in from the right but shot straight at George Legg, then in the last minute of normal time Richard Taundry curled a speculative shot over the bar from 30 yards.
