George Legg 1 Charlie Horlock A late rally brought Chesham a draw in their opening game of the season. Sam Youngs’ equaliser ten minutes from time changed the course of the match and left the visitors grateful to hear the final whistle.

Chesham were unchanged from Saturday’s narrow defeat at Leamington. The opening half-hour was even with neither side looking like finding a way through. For Chesham Sam Youngs shot wide from distance, while for Hitchin Kane Smith broke forward and shot powerfully from distance but a couple of yards wide of the far post. Chesham’s best chance came on 34 minutes, when a long clearance was headed by Brad Wadkins into the path of Ryan Blake who broke clear but his effort was blocked by keeper Charlie Horlock at the expense of a corner. Two minutes before half-time Curtis Ujah was booked for bringing down Simon Martin 30 yards out, but Matt Lench’s free kick sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Early in the second half Chesham came close when Brad Wadkins’ lay-off found Ryan Blake whose shot was blocked, then Wadkins glanced a header wide of the far post from a Sam Youngs free kick. As the game began to open up Hitchin enjoyed their best spell of the game. Matt Lench attempted to surprise George Legg with a snap shot from wide on the left but the keeper parried then held on to the ball, then Simon Martin cut in from the right and shot goalwards but Legg tipped the ball over. Midway through the half Hitchin took the lead when Jonny McNamara held off a challenge from Ashley Smith, and ran through to slot the ball past the advancing George Legg. Chesham began to put pressure on the Hitchin goal and ten minutes from time Ryan Blake got to the by-line and crossed, Horlock saved but allowed the ball to slip out of his grasp at the near post and Sam Youngs swept the ball home to equalise. Hitchin had one more moment of danger when McNamara crossed just in front of the onrushing Matt Lench, but Chesham came closer to a late winner. In the last minute of normal time Barry Hayles fired across goal and just past the far post, then Brad Wadkins had a shot blocked at the expense of a corner. The resulting kick was cleared back to Sam Youngs who crossed back into the area and Laurie Stewart headed just wide of the far post.
