Man Of The Match
The Whole Team
Lee Nicholls 31/1 Shane Gore Chesham created history with the club’s first-ever win over a Football League club in the FA Cup. This was a classic smash and grab as Chesham took advantage of the home team’s failures in front of goal, and sealed a magnificent win with Ryan Blake’s late strike. Although much of the pre-match publicity rightly centred on former Rovers legend Barry Hayles, this was a day for all the players who featured and it would be impossible to pick out a man of the match.

Matt Taylor, Sam Youngs and Brad Wadkins all returned to the team, replacing Kelvin Bossman and Adam Martin who were ineligible and Bruce Wilson who was suspended. Barry Hayles was on the bench after seven weeks out with a foot injury. Chesham made a confident start and won a free kick on the right-hand edge of the home area, Toby Little just clearing the bar with his shot. Home striker Matty Taylor then shot over the bar from distance, but the game then went into a quiet spell. After 24 minutes Ryan Blake played the ball back across after a Toby Little corner, and Curtis Ujah turned the ball goalwards but just wide of the post. Four minutes later Brad Wadkins ran on to a loose ball in the home area only to be brought down by Tom Lockyer. Replays showed that it was a definite penalty, but Dave Pearce’s kick was superbly turned away by home keeper Lee Nicholls who was a couple of yards off his line. The resulting corner was cleared as far as Sam Youngs who fired over from 25 yards. However the home team were boosted by the let-off, and Billy Bodin cut in from the right and unleashed a well-hit shot that Shane Gore dived to his left to turn behind. From the resulting corner Matty Taylor’s header was cleared off the line by Toby Little. Shortly afterwards Bodin’s cross was hit first-time by Ellis Harrison but the ball flew well wide of the near post. In stoppage time Bristol Rovers’ Matty Taylor had a shot that took a slight deflection and flew just wide.

Early in the second half Matty Taylor looked sure to score from Lee Mansell’s crossfield pass, but took too long and eventually his effort was deflected over the bar. The resulting corner came to Billy Bodin, who controlled and blazed over the top from beyond the far post. The home team took control and Lee Mansell’s shot was pushed away by Shane Gore, then Tom Lockyer got his head to the resulting corner but his effort went over the bar. Just after the hour mark Billy Bodin shot wastefully over after Matty Taylor had set him up. Midway through the half home sub Jermaine Easter broke clear but Shane Gore parried, and the ball dropped to Ellis Harrison who blazed over from ten yards. However Chesham rode the storm as the home team looked increasingly desperate, and the vital breakthrough came thirteen minutes from time. Chesham cleared their lines and broke down the left, Ryan Blake picking the ball up on the left touchline and advancing on goal to unleash a 30-yard drive that beat Nicholls at his near post. The home team were stunned and threw themselves into a late assault, Jermaine Easter advancing to the edge of the area but his eventual shot was deflected behind. Three minutes from time Lee Brown’s corner was met by Ellis Harrison but Shane Gore stretched to claw the ball away. In the last minute of normal time Gore produced another great save from a fierce drive by Jermaine Easter. Chesham’s players were running on empty as the fourth official showed six minutes of stoppage time, but although Rovers won a succession of corners they came to nothing and Chesham were eventually able to celebrate a momentous day.
