Ben Williams 1 Shane Gore Chesham’s glorious FA Cup run finally came to an end with defeat at Bradford City. Chesham were always going to be up against it against one of League One’s in-form teams, and Bradford’s second goal shortly before half-time put paid to any thoughts of an upset. However Chesham gave a good account of themselves and were still going forward when two stoppage-time goals put a slightly unfair gloss on the scoreline.

Chesham’s starting-line up saw only one change from the epic win at Bristol Rovers four weeks before, Bruce Wilson (who missed the match through suspension) returning in place of Dave Pearce. Bradford’s team showed only two changes from the side narrowly beaten at Walsall the previous week. After an early effort from long range by Billy Knott, Chesham looked bright in attack and got a couple of crosses into the home area early on. In the 14th minute Matt Taylor’s ball down the left found Brad Wadkins, who laid the ball into the path of Ryan Blake who shot over from just inside the home area. At the other end Tony McMahon shot well over the bar from a dangerous position on the home right, but Chesham came back with Sam Youngs intercepting a clearance and finding Ryan Blake who controlled and shot over the bar. However in the next minute James Hanson headed down a long ball, Billy Clarke failed to control but the ball ran loose on the edge of the Chesham area and Kyel Reid shot low into the corner of the net to give Bradford the lead. Five minutes later Stephen Darby broke forward and seemed to be brought down just inside the area, but the loose ball ran to James Hanson whose shot was comfortably held by Shane Gore. Five minutes later Gore produced a fine reaction save to keep out a James Hanson header from Tony McMahon’s corner. Against a team that had kept six clean sheets in eight games, Chesham could not afford a second goal before half-time, but in the 43rd minutes the defence misjudged a hopeful long ball from Lee Evans and Hanson stole in to shoot across Shane Gore and into the far corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Early in the second half Rory McArdle’s short back-pass forced a hurried clearance from keeper Ben Williams, which Ryan Blake blocked but the ball went harmlessly wide. On 50 minutes another long crossfield ball came to James Hanson who hit the ball first-time with his left foot but just missed the near post. Around the hour mark Stephen Darby ran to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Stephen Darby who shot over the bar, then Kyel Reid crossed from the left to Billy Clarke whose diving header flew just wide of the near post. Midway through the half Barry Hayles came on as a substitute, and immediately forced Ben Williams to punch away a Dave Pearce corner to Sam Youngs whose shot beat the keeper but flew narrowly over. Billy Clarke then hit a dipping shot over, then Clarke broke clear but Sam Youngs got in a fine tackle to save the day. As Chesham pushed forward Bradford nearly took advantage when McMahon set up sub Devante Cole, but Cole’s first touch was too heavy and Shane Gore was able to dive on the ball. Almost immediately Chesham broke forward and Ben Williams had to be alert to block an angled drive from Ryan Blake. In the last minute of normal time a Lee Evans cross was blocked by Nick Beasant, and the ball fell to Tony McMahon whose shot was blocked by Beasant at the expense of a corner. McMahon took the resulting kick which was turned into the net by sub Gary Liddle for Bradford’s third. There was still time for James Hanson to head the ball into the path of McMahon, who squared for Cole to score a fourth goal with a close-range back-heel.
